FINAL EXAMINATION: ORGANIZATIONAL BEHAVIOUR

  1. How can you personally reduce prejudice in this world?

Prejudice is an unfavourable opinion or felling formed beforehand without knowledge, thoughts or reason (Dictionary.com). This opinion can be towards a sex, race, religions or national groups. Apparently, every human has a pre judgments feeling consciously or unconsciously towards certain thing, issue or being.

Prejudice limits the way we interact with others objectively, and it has serious adverse effect especially in interpersonal relationship and can lead to global conflict. Prejudice is a social problem.

Reducing prejudice in the world is a collective effort, but it must start with the individual. Personally, dealing with prejudice includes;

  1. Acceptance:  Acknowledging that I have prejudged people or situations and understanding the world can only be better if I live in diversity and appreciating people with different opinions and ideology.
  2. Self Reflection: This is key to curbing prejudice, examining those values, thinking and perception I’m selfish about. This is the most difficult part, as we have allowed these intangibles be a part of our lives. The need to put ourselves into a self test, assessing our relationship with others and how I deal with minorities or with different groups, the emotions I show, is it fearful? Aggressive? Defensive?
  3. Changing Perception:  The attitudinal change is very pertinent, diffuse assumptions about others without valid reasons, and analyze where those ideas originate, look whether there’s proof to support my thinking. Resolve to treat people in a different manner and enforce it whenever I deal with them.
  4. Interaction:  Interacting with people of different values and ideology will pave the way for us to reduce initially and dissolve later our own bias thinking. When you share and experience with people, it makes you have a positive thinking towards them. Through interaction, you get to exchange ideas and values, and you may realize that even those ideas you think are positive, could actually be perceived as negative universally.

It should be understood that feeling of prejudice must be eliminated from an individual before it can be preached to others, such ambassador should be able to prove beyond all doubt that he’s free of prejudice and can tolerate everybody irrespective of their race, belief or background.

In other to reduce prejudice, a continuous campaign must be made in our family, friends, workplace, community and every other people we come across with.

Discuss the problems of Prejudice in the workplace and provide one example of how you change this?

Prejudice at workplace is a common issue and has various effects on the development of the business organization.  In cases, where prejudice exists informally as part of the Organizational culture, there have been events where staff kicks against some form of prejudice. It has been understood that pre judging doesn’t make an individual make an objective conclusion.

Prejudice can be a workplace issue in the following way:

  1. Communication Distortion:  when people feel they have been prejudiced, they usually draw into their shell, since people take offence; it is believed that the best way to shoe their emotions is to terminate social interactions from colleague. When a bias is created, people tend not to communicate objectively; they report or receive issues with resentment. When majority receives preferences over minority, there’s bias and this distorts perceptions and communication (Murray,2009). Misinterpretation of message and anger could be the feedback of any message that is sent with prejudice In any business line, communication is key to human contribution to organizational growth and development.
  2. Uneven Reward System: This can come in promotion, bonuses, allowances, medical welfare, etc. In an organization where pre judging of the minority is a culture, they majority are highly favoured even when they don’t merit it. Since rewards usually are as a result of appraisal or study of an employee, a bias analysis will not provide an objective outlook of such an employee, thus he/her result may not be favourable.
  3. Low Productivity:  Workers tend to perform if their performance is not based on personal bias or prejudice (Vroom, 1964). In any environment where minority employees show resentment towards issues or the majority of the employees, it demoralizes them, and they tend not to put their whole effort towards business growth.
  4. Workplace Conflict: Prejudice brings intolerance and discrimination and this create tension which eventually leads to verbal/physical fight in an organization, as there is a lack of understanding or common ground even on simple issue.
