Tourism to the UK by overseas visitors

Different reports made by International Passenger Survey are showing the estimated number of overseas visitors to the UK in several years.  Starting with year 2000 there is registered approximately 25.2 million visits made to the UK by overseas tourists, representing double the number that was registered in 1980, recording a slightly increase with a spend of £ 12.8 billion.

 In 2000 it is record a deficit of £ 11.4 billion the difference being nearly £ 2 billion more than in 1999. Visits made by the European residents between 1996 and 2000 decreased with one and half million, meanwhile visits made by North America and ‘Other Countries’ are of setting a great increase. Visitors from long distanced countries like North America, Canada, India, Australia and South Africa show a high rate of visits to the UK in comparison with a down rate of visits from the European countries like Germany, France, Italy and Belgium.

        Two years late, visits to the UK fell from 25.7 million in 1998 to 24.2 million in 2002, affecting in the same time the spending which decreased from £ 0.9 billion to £ 11.7 billion between 1998 and 2002.

        In 2004 it is seen a rise in visits to the UK from 25.2 million in 2000 to 27.8 million in 2004, comparing with 2001 which faced a dramatic fell. Also the spendings increased from £12.8 billion in 2002 to £13.0 billion in 2004.

In 2006 and 2007 it is registered an all-time record in visits made to the UK by overseas residents with a number of 32.7 million visitors and 32.8 million, keeping a constant level with a difference of 1 million between 2006 and 2007.
