Players and Positions

Players:

  • Hockey teams are made up of  16  players

  • Only 11 of these are allowed on the pitch at any time

  • One of these 11 MUST be a goal keeper

  • The 5 remaining players are known as ROLLING SUBSTITUTES

  • They can be taken off the field and be put back on at any time

Positions

GK:        Goal Keeper = stops balls going in the goal

Sweeper: Covering Defender

Left / Right Striker: pressure defenders / score goals!

Centre Midfield: Hold the middle of the pitch marks CM

Centre Forward: Tackle back, blocks free hits

Left / Right / Centre Defence: To give width in attack and defence

Right / Left Midfield: Force attacker to sidelines

The Grip:

• Hold the stick with the left hand at the top

• The thumb and forefinger form a V down the back. This should ensure that the hitting (flat) surface faces the ground

• The right hand is a third to half way down the shaft

• The left hand controls the rotational movement of the stick

• The right hand provides support and additional control

The Push Pass:

The push is the best way to pass the ball over a short distance of about 10m-15m. It's a quick and accurate way of getting the ball to your team-mate. It's an easy move to disguise - so use it to fool the opposition.  The push is different from a hit because there is no backswing.  That's why you should not be able to hear the sound of the stick hitting the ball when you carry out this move.

Step One

Your hands should be approximately 30cm apart with the left hand near the top of the stick and the right hand further down.
