Chapter 1

The Problem

Chapter One, consists of eight parts: Part 1) Background of the Study, 2) Statement of the Problem, 3) Hypothesis, 4) Review of Literature, 5) Definition of Terms, 6) Significance of the Study, 7)Delimitation of the Study.

Part One, Background of the Study, presents the introduction of the study and describes the rationale for choosing the problem.

Part Two, Statement of the Problem, presents the main problem of the study and the specific question to be answered.

Part Three, Hypothesis advances the possible answer to the problem stated.

Part Four, Review of Literature, to give readers more classification and to check the possibility of establishing the relationship between the variables under the study.

Part Five, Definition of Terms, gives the conceptual and operational definitions of the important terms used in the study.

Part Six, Significance of the study, provides benefits that can be derived from the study.

Part Seven, Delimitation of the Study, states the specific coverage and the nature of the subjects treated to the study.

Background of the Study

Leisure has been defined (Godbey, 1990) as certain types of activities. The ancient Greek word for leisure, “Schale”,

Means “serious activity without the pressure of necessity”, this term does not imply a strict distinction from work nor is it synonyms with the term “Recreation”, since Greek had another term meaning “playful amusements to the pass the time”, the English word “School” is derived from the Greek word for leisure.

Every individual has his own unique ways, has his own development and has his own capacity of using his pleasure time. A man spent his pleasure time in a best ways can experience worthful experience, can see the wonder of the creature and make himself satisfy.

Secondary school students are at the formative period of development. In learning situation the principle of teaching recognize that in certain learning areas are influenced by certain factors such as interest, socio-economic status, gender and other variables which are directly relate to the students themselves.

Adolescent also appear to have more time for leisure and higher participation rates in recreation activities than their older counterparts. With increasing age and education, generally, comes increasing freedom and access to the resources. Skills, interest and attitudes developed through leisure time are essential to the individual and to the society.

Statement of the Problem

This study aimed to determine the recreational activities of Leganes National high School selected second year students during school year 2005-2006.

Specifically this study attempted to answer the following questions.

  1. What are the recreational activities of selected second year students of Leganes national high School?
  2. Are there significant differences in the recreational activities of the students when classified according to gender, first year GPA, and estimated family monthly income?

Hypothesis

Base on proceeding problem, this hypothesis was formulated.

  1. There is no significant difference in the recreational activities of the students when classified according to gender, first year GPA and estimated family monthly income.

Review of Related Literature

A strong school of thought believes that recreation is a great character. Recreation can contribute to the environment of aesthetic values and in turn utilized them on its behalf. Artistic activity can be recreational and vice versa. The instrumental values of play for children are that is educative and healthful. Play is the source of experience and provides the opportunity for the development of muscles, skill and sociability in all its forms (Broudy, 1954).

Many subjects taught in the classroom maybe supplemented and enriched through outdoor experiences. Actual experience leads reality and dimension to textbooks on science, history, geography and health. In categories of music, drama, social recreation and hobbies, for example, there maybe many opportunities for mental activities, the teenager who spends his leisure in composing short stories enjoy the thrill and achievement of the creative experience. Other mental and literary activities may involve several persons as the need crisis to communicate, to display new skills or knowledge, or to compete with other minds. In addition to providing a satisfying outlet for excess energy, physical recreation may improve body tone, increase length. Develop coordination, and perfect manipulative abilities (Carlson, 1967).

Moreover, according to (Kraus, 1883) if most leisure activities are carried on in groups and it is possible from earliest childhood to encourage participation in play groups, clubs, teams or musical or theater organization will help youngster develop the ability to relate to others. For many individuals, creative and satisfying leisure activities represent a positive means of maintaining sound mental health and preventing disability.

Adolescents with a lower standard of living have less opportunity to develop interest because of house chores and financial problems. Those with higher standard of living read more, have more contacts with people of their own age, can attend better schools, and enjoy more wholesome recreational activities like reading. City adolescents have better cultured and rich surrounding than rural teenagers. Rural adolescents resort in walking, horseback riding, and roaming around, while city young people are more interested in sex, ambition, ideals, personal attraction, music, art, theater and in getting along with others (Kapunan, 1971.

The middle income group spend relatively less than either the higher income group. This explanation of high percentage in the lower income group may lie in the following consideration:

  1. The lower income group includes many children and retired people, both whom spend more than they earn.
  2. The lower income group may spend smaller percentage of money on education and housing than the middle income group.
  3. the total spent for recreation by the lower income group maybe no higher than that of the middle income group, although the total income is higher(Carlson 1967).

Parents were often unable to provide much financial help because of low family income, but they had promoted values and study habits that encouraged their endless academic success. People were often unable to provide much financial help because of low family income, but they had promoted values and study habits that encouraged their endless academic success (Matlin, 1992).

Girls prefer more sedentary activities than vigorous ones, while boys prefer competitive games. Girl’s interest is less variable and fluctuate less from one age to another. Symond’s studies show that at mating time, boys are more interested in money, health, success, sex, and sports while girls show greater interest in grooming, philosophy of life and religion. Before puberty girls tend to play or engage in recreational activities with girls and boys with boys, there are also change in recreational interest for who can afford recreational activities. Less time is spent for recreational experiences because of bodily changes and because of increased responsibilities. Some adolescents would rather sit talk; attend games and sports as spectators. Reading comics who persists from childhood, magazines and pocketbooks occupies the interest of both sexes, although from observation and experience, adolescents have to be prodded to read books and articles from magazines which can challenge their intellect and appeal to their aesthetic sense. Instead, they tend to like magazine about crime, biographies, exploring, daydreaming and dancing, especially among girls and boxing for boys (Kapunan, 1971).

In addition, men prefer to read books on adventure, travel and exploration, women on the other hand, read books on love, romance, children and family life. Men are fond of discussing physical health safety, money, sex. Women are most concerned about personal attractiveness, personal and mental health, personal qualities, home and family relationship. Males prefer job which demand persuasion, computation, mechanical and scientific work while the females are more interested in literary, musical, artistic, social service and clerical work. Women are more interested in aesthetic, social, and religious values, while men are more concerned with theoretical, economic and political values (Librada, 1996).

Furthermore, individuals with poor mental health often have exaggerated feeling of worthlessness and deficiency in body structure, athletic activity, intellectual performance and other personal characteristics. Unable to achieve normal relationship, they frequently become supersensitive to social slights and apprehensive about failure of rejection and they ultimately withdraw from social contacts.

Recreation can help such individual be successful and develop feelings of self worth. It provides a socially acceptable release for violent or hostile emotions. Recreation maybe be used to strengthen or develop such defense mechanism as repression, displacement of emotions, substitution, sublimation, and compensation. Thus, recreation provides a means of dealing with ones antisocial or unhealthy impulse (Kraus, 1983).

Reading novels, as part of recreation have some influence in the reader’s life. According to the study, the 19th century classics by the Brontic sisters top the list of novels that have most influenced the lives of woman in Britain. At the top of the list were the popular 19th century classics such as Jane Eyre by Charlote Bronte, Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte, Middlemarch by George Elliot, and pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. But two new favorites also crept into the top five. Lisa Jardine, a professor at the Centre of Editing Lives and Letters in London, who led the study, said, we defined a “watershed” book as one that has made crucial difference during some transitional period in life.

More people than ever are reading for pleasure in Britain 65 % in today, compared with 55 % in 1979, according to a survey conducted by the national Reading Campaign in September 2004. In fact, reading and sharing thoughts on novels has become so popular that thousands of reading clubs have been set up in villages and communities throughout the country. Most are informal, with monthly meetings and members taking turns to recommend a book.

Bookstores have been keen to get involved and many have started to offer reading clubs, discounts. Some, especially those with in house coffee bars, have set up their own reading clubs, dubbed the “late literati” by many (Woman’s Journal 2005).

Landscaping as another kind of recreation have some therapeutic value like a dish garden a landscape in miniature has become popular as an indoor garden. For some, this is an expression of love of nature and artistic skill put together. Dish gardening is not only an artistic hobby and good source of income but also a form of therapy.

Definition of Terms

In this study, it refers to the hobbies and interests that a student may spend with during their free time when they are at home, in school or during vacation.

Recreation-is the act of recreating or the state of being created; refreshment of the strength and spirit after toil (Webster’s Third International Dictionary, 1993).

In this study, it refers to the worthful activities that a student may engage with during their leisure time.

Significance of the study

This study identifies some variable influencing the recreational activities of second year high school students. The result of this study will be of great help to all educators as it will provide them the importance on what the students do during their free time.

The teacher who is aware these preferences can readily affect certain modifications in their teaching methods and materials in order to help make the high school student life more meaningful, interesting, and provide opportunity for maximal development of student potentials.

The findings of this study may also help students through information and awareness about the recreational habit of their schoolmates, friends and classmates.

Furthermore, this study will help the parents to know what their son and daughters activities during their free time and have more knowledge about the preferences of their children that can be help in improving parent child relationship.

Delimitation of the Study

This descriptive research was conducted to find out the recreational preferences of biology students at LNHS year 2005-2006.

The factors that affect the recreational preferences were limited to gender, first year GPA, and estimated family monthly income.

The data gathered through the use of checklist on recreational preferences.

The respondents of the study were composed of fifty sampled biology students selected at random. Descriptive statistics employed were ranking, mean, and t-test.

Chapter 2

Design of the Study

Chapter Two consists of five parts: (1) Methodology, (2) Subjects, (3) Instruments, (4) Procedure, (5) Data Analysis.

Part One, Method, explains the research method employed in this study.

Part Two, Subjects, describe the respondents involve in the study.

Part Three, Instrument, describes the data gathering instruments and materials used in the study.

Part Four, procedure, explains the step employed in conducting the study.

Part Five, Data Analysis, involve the process or computing the data and their validation.

Design of the Study

The study aimed to determine the recreational preferences among second year students of Leganes National High School. The descriptive method of research was employed in the study. Descriptive studies involve classification, which is essence is seeing similarities and differences among experiences. Classification is also foundational to such activities as systematic observation, counting, measuring, and evaluating (Good, 1972).

The independent variable in the study was the respondents, the gender, Socio-economic status and the first year GPA. The dependent variable was the recreational preferences of the selected second year students. It further determined the therapeutic and importance of leisure as recreation to the students and other people. The study also determined the recreational preferences of selected second year students with the influence of high technology and environment.

It is hypothesized that there is no significant difference in the recreational preferences when classified according to gender, SES and first year GPA.
