Review: This is England

Title: This is England

Director: Shane Meadows

Date film was released: 2007

This is England is a fantastic film that looks back at life in the early eighties of British working class people through the eyes of Shaun, a lonely 12 year old who is constantly bullied at school for having old ragged clothing and no friends but worst of all, he was bullied about his father that was killed in the Falklands War, whom he and his mother are still grieving for. Shaun lives with his mother in a grim costal town in a council house, who has no money and no confidence. This is a typical inner city scenario in the 80’s where the houses were dull, the people were poor and unskilled with no qualifications and there were gangs that separated groups of people.

On the last day of the term, on his way home from school, Shaun meets a skinhead gang, woody being the ‘leader.’ Woody feels sorry for Shaun and offers him a place in their gang finding him a new lease of life. The gang is very sympathetic and understanding towards Shaun. Shaun is very grateful to them for taking him under their wing and soon Shaun discovers girls, parties, drinking, smoking, Dr Martin boots, braces, and a shaven hairstyle. Shaun wears his clothes with pride and feels a new person with this new identity. At first, his mother disagrees with him hanging out with the gang because of the age difference but she eventually expresses to him how impressed she is and thinks that he has become much more confident and thanks Woody for what he has done. Woody’s gang includes four white members and one black member, Milky who Shaun really admires. I think the reason for having a black member in the gang deconstructs any racial attitudes towards him. Shaun thinks he is on top of the world and explains to Woody and the gang that he is having the best time of his life with them. I think the gang are like the father figure he has been seeking and longing for since his father died.

However, this happiness soon comes to an abrupt halt when the racist gang leader, Combo, comes out fresh from prison and sees Shaun as a younger version of himself. Combo shows Woody that he is the leader again and splits the group into two, which are the non-racist skinheads, who is Woody and the gang, and the white power skinheads, which is Combo and his crew. Combo gives the groups the choice in which group to side but Combo persuades Shaun to join his gang in order to make his father proud. Shaun makes this choice after Combo gives ...
