School Uniform: A Good Idea?

A safe and disciplined learning environment is a very important requirement of a good school. Young people who feel safe and secure in their place of learning are often better students. It is probably true to say that there are growing levels of violence in schools, and many parents and teachers have come to see school uniforms as a positive, creative, and effective way of reducing discipline problems and increasing school safety. Some people however, fail to see what other people claim to be the benefits of school uniform, and it is very likely that the children, who are wearing the uniform, will not be too keen on doing so.

In schools today, there is a high level of violence and theft. Children are picked on for various reasons, and people are constantly trying to find methods of eliminating this aspect of school life. It would make sense then, that to stop children being teased about what clothes they wear, school uniform should be introduced. Ex US President, Bill Clinton amusingly said on the subject, that he would be for school uniforms, “if it means that teenagers would stop killing each other over designer jackets. This sort of extreme is uncommon in America, but it is even more uncommon in the UK. It is more likely to find children being made fun of for the type of clothes they wear, or even more likely, the make of clothes. School uniform reduces the amount of bullying in this area, and can make children’s lives at school much more enjoyable on the whole.

At any school where there is more than one pupil, there will be peer pressure. This is not just hard on the child involved, but it is also hard for the parent.
