Teaching Notes

The virtual trail that has been created is based around the topic of ‘Our World’. This is a very broad theme that covers many areas such as; the creation story, people and places, animals and how to keep our world tidy.  The creation story tells the story in a simple way which is easy for the children to comprehend. It has two very simple activities that can either be completed as a whole class discussion, independent or pair work, depending on the level of ability of pupils in the class. The second section covers 9 different areas of the world containing fun facts under headings such as ‘General Knowledge’, ‘Food’ and ‘Religion’. Next is the animal section, which contains information on 2 animals from 7 areas on the map. Lastly is the ‘Keeping our World Tidy’ section containing key facts about the issues surrounding recycling. This section offers a broad base that the teacher can expand in any way they wish, dependant on how they wish to approach the topic in their class.

The virtual trail would be suitable for children in higher key stage one and lower key stage two. Personally, I would target the trail towards Year 2 children (age 6-7). I feel they would benefit the most from the contents of the trail. It is written in simple English to make it beneficial to the learner. The aim of the trail is to give the children an insight into the world they live. As it is designed for children of a young age it keeps detail very simple, and provides interesting facts and figures about different places and animals around the world. Each slide is narrated by ‘Woody’, a character that will excite children and engage their learning. A teacher may choose to use the trail as a base for a whole years work or just use one section of the trail as a term or weekly topic. This just shows the flexibility and adaptability of the trail in terms of its usage in the classroom. In my opinion, to make the most of the content, it would be beneficial to use it over the whole school year. Firstly concentrating on the creation story, taking up 2 to 3 lessons. Moving on to the different areas of the world which could be used to compare and contrast the day-to-day life of people in Wales/England. The animal section can be used independently or in conjunction with other areas to enable cross curricular learning. I believe that it would link with habitats, food chains and many other topics within the nation curriculum.

I gathered much of the information used within the trail from reputable websites and books and also used my own knowledge to build the banks of information. Many of pictures and photographs that where used was also taken from the internet picture bank. All have been referenced in the reference list (Appendix 1). (559)
