FOREWORD

This document has been prepared by Dominique Price within the limitations of the resources devoted to it by the Client.

In order to arrive at a suitable foundation design selection for the Holly Hill campus, the following report will analyse the different methods available and determine the most suitable criteria according to the existing ground conditions.

This document shall not be used for engineering or contractual purposes unless agreed with the Client.

This report has been prepared upon the instruction of Bexley College dated February 2010. The site is Bexley College, Holly Hill Campus and it is understood that the requirement of 1No. four storey building and 2No. single storey buildings are to be constructed in the near future. As part of the proposed scheme, the Client requested a ground investigation to assess the ground conditions on the site and also to investigate the foundations and superstructure requirements. A full site Investigation will provide the following:

  • Desk Study – collection of known data to include:
  • Ordnance survey maps
  • Geological maps
  • Site history
  • Previous planning applications/approvals
  • Current planning application in the area
  • Development restrictions
  • Utilities
  • Aerial photographs
  • Ecological factors
  • Local Knowledge
  • Proximity of local land fill sites

  • Field Study – intrusive visual and physical activity to:
  • Establish site characteristics from the desk study
  • Access potential hazards to health and safety
  • Appraise surface conditions
  • Appraise ground water conditions
  • Take subsoil samples and conduct in-situ tests
  • Consider the need for subsoil exploration, trial pits and bore holes
  • Appraise existing structures
