“Stalin was personally responsible for the Purges in Russia in the 1930s”

For

  • Tens of millions of people were executed/ imprisoned- surely Stalin was aware of this fact?! 5% of the population had been arrested and 7 million were in Gulags.

  • Stalin was paranoid that his power could be affected by potential threats, therefore the Purges occurred! Evidence: he wanted to eliminate all opposition- he felt threatened by males (as women were not expected to be in Politics in those times). Women could not affect his control or position, but men could. 98% of the purged were male. Historian R. Conquest quote: “Stalin was a leader whose callous disregard for human life was matched by his consuming paranoia.”

  • The “cleansing” of opposition to Stalin’s regime were evident before the ‘Purges’ began: ‘Collectivisation’ and ‘Industrialisation’ featured murder on a massive scale! 1928 Stalin attacked the Kulaks for not supplying enough food to industrial workers…therefore obviously against the regime and USSR’s recovery! Traitors! 1,000s of Kulaks were executed and an estimated 5million were deported to Siberia!

  • Furthermore, the Ukraine did not agree with the ‘collectivisation’, openly disagreed with Stalin’s plan and therefore the regime. This led to Stalin manufacturing a famine, which killed 6-7million people and broke the Ukraine resistance! Evidence: Stalin increased the grain quota that the peasants had to give the state massively, led to famine!)

  • Moreover, FYPs (Five Year Plans) were based on the same methods. They were implemented in a brutal fashion- led to the deaths of millions of labourers.

  • Stalin wanted to cleanse himself of critics and potential rivals. Evidence: there were factions that opposed his rule. Stalin believed these differing viewpoints represented an unacceptable threat. Anyone not unquestioningly loyal to him had to be “weeded out”. He wanted to rebuild the Comm. Party in the image of the ‘Great Leader’. Evidence: between 1936 and 1938, 850,000 members, 36% of the total membership were purged from the Party!

  • Stalin wanted TOTAL CONTROL and rapid industrialisation of USSR. Gulags offered free labourers to Stalin, to help boost industry, whilst simultaneously ridding him off opposition.

  • Purges waged within the key Soviet institutions, such as, Army, NKVD, scientists and engineers, how did Stalin not realise what was happening?!

  • Stalin’s personal responsibility is probable for Kirov’s assassination could either be an excuse or coincidence. Sparked the escalating series of Purges…excuse to start purging?! Evidence: Stalin immediately under emergency “security” legislation allowed to arrest people thought to be trying “terrorist acts” against the regime an put them on trial with no appeals and NKVD was to sentence the guilty to death! Stalin may have killed Kirov due to jealousy + Kirov was twice voted in majority of Stalin over a policy of reconciliation put forward by K. in 1934 and the demands K. made to stop the arrests and ...
