Why was "Operation Overlord" such a success for the Allies?
Operation Overlord was a success for the Allies for many reasons. This war could not be won by Britain until all of Nazi occupied Europe was freed. This would open a second front to invade Germany by, but it was also going to be a long costly operation unless the Germans surrendered. This was almost out of the question, as it would make Hitler look weak. Operation Overlord was designed to open this second front and free France, which was being occupied by the Nazis. It did just that, but a lot of painstaking hard work was put into making it a success for the Allies.
The preparation for D-Day took over three years before it was actually put into action. This meticulous planning included the French resistance workers that were helping to gain information for the Allies from the Nazi occupied France. Secondly there was the careful analysis of the coastlines, which narrowed the choice down to one of two beaches; these were Normandy and the Pas de Calais.
