Schutte et Al. [5] proposed a statistical method to calculate the amount by which a subject’s gait deviates from an average normal profile, and to represent this deviation as a single number. The method uses principal components analysis to derive a set of 16 independent variables from 16 selected gait variables [6]. This number was defined as the “Normalcy Index” (NI).
The aims of this study are: to implement NI calculation by an automatic procedure. The procedure must be easy to apply because it has to be widely utilized. The purpose of this precedure will be
1. to evaluate if the NI has the required characteristics of simplicity of use and clinical meaning, high effectiveness and reliability;
2. to analyse the set of parameters and to consider the possibility of removing some redundant parameters and/or of including other more significative parameters;
3. to analyse the relation between NI and other clinical evaluation scales.
In order to achieve the proposed aims, the procedure of NI calculation will be applied to GA data of a large number of subjects affected by CP (about 200 subjects).
This study will be realized in collaboration with the group that developed NI, so that the new problems will be analysed from the same point of view and the same methodology will be followed to optimize the procedure of NI calculation.
