An Analysis of the Opening Scene for the Film Halloween

The film Halloween directed by John Carpenter concerns the escape of a psychologically disturbed man from an institution where he was locked up for fifteen years for killing his sister. He returns to his hometown of Haddonfield to bring terror to the townsfolk and to repeat his crime of the savage murder.

In the opening sequence of a horror film the audience will expect to see fright and suspense building materials and this identifies the horror genre.

The settings for horror films are the most commonly remote, suburban areas, which are sometimes seen as safe places to live. However suburban areas are where it is most likely for murders etc to happen as they create a sense of isolation. Also in a horror film you find that most scenes are set in the night and dark surroundings such as forests and alleyways.

The characters of a horror film also help to establish genre, as a typical horror film character who is a representation of a normality and is regularly the hero of the film. It also has another character that is a threat to normality and this creature is normally a monster or if a human a psychopath.

Victims of horror films are usually predictable and are typically always young female teenagers who are vulnerable and easily liable to fear and terror.

Music and sound play an important part in establishing the horror genre to the audience as they create an atmosphere and build up suspense. Eerie music increases the audience’s eagerness as something bad is going to happen and key signs of horror genre including doors creaking, footsteps, thunderstorms and screaming all add up to the building of suspense and increasing the audience’s fear.

Low key lighting is often used in horror films because it creates a sharp constant of light add dark areas producing sharp, distinct shadows. In edition to settings, characters, music, sound and lighting, camera angles, movement and iconology are other elements of a film that are important in establishing genre.

Close up shots are conventional in horror films as they can really capture the fear on the victims face and of the malicious look on the aggressors face.
