Essay topic: In what ways has technology expanded or limited the acquisition of knowledge?

From the prehistory to today, humanity has dramatically changed. Innovations lead to technology, which in turn, lead to the world's development. Today, technology plays a very important role in the acquisition of knowledge. People can gather or access information very quickly and through many different ways. This brought consciousness to society as a whole. So technology expanded the acquisition of knowledge in many different ways. Nevertheless, there were also times when humans were limited to knowledge because of the fast growing technology. By giving concrete examples throughout this essay, we will determine how technology has expanded or limited the acquisition of knowledge.

One of the ways technology expanded the acquisition of knowledge is through the electronic media. By electronic media, we include the television, the radio, the video, the computer and the Internet, the fax machine, etc... Today, the electronic media provides all of the information a person needs. It is very easy to access and very fast compared to other sources. Many years ago, people had to go through many stages in order to find the information needed and sometimes, information was very hard to get. For example, a person in the 1920s had to walk to the nearest library; he then had to search for a long time to find the book that would give him the information needed. He would then buy the book and return back home. Whereas today, a person can log on to the Internet at home and with a click of a mouse, he could access hundreds of different sources that would give him even more updated information. So, the Internet, considered to be one of the most brilliant and beneficial innovations in the world, makes it very easy for people to find any kind of information because of its easy and fast accessibility. Another example is the "knowledge" about what is going on around wether national or international. In the old days like the eighteenth and seventeenth century, people got news through letters delivered by a special envoy. It took many days and even weeks to deliver letters from one region to another and the process was costly too. Thus people were unaware of what was happening around the world and around their region except for the rich or those who could afford sending letters. However, today, the world has changed, with the help of televisions, radios, fax machines or even telephones, live news can be easily known, watched and heard. Therefore, the television, the radio and the fax machine made it very easy for people to look at the news, hear it and know it through printed-paper.

Another of the electronic media's good qualities that helped in the expansion of the acquisition of knowledge is its diversity. Today, with the help of the Internet, the television, the radio and the video people can know different perspectives of the information needed. For example, if a person wants to know the story that has lead to the dispute between the Palestinians and the Israelis, he would find different kinds of stories having different points of view because of the many different sources that are available on the electronic media machines. Therefore he would be more open minded ...
