‘Media provides a public space in which information is shared and the public informed’

Keeping the public informed can be an arduous task.  The media has many different forms that capture the imagination and inform society of what is happening within its social ground, and on an international level.  We communicate events and transfer knowledge to millions of minds everyday.  Within my analysis I will be looking at the ways in which the news and current affairs are represented with a journalistic approach using the written word and its more visual counterpart the news broadcast.

The two mediums chosen to represent the two different styles of media are the front page of The Independent newspaper and channel three and four’s news for the 17th of March 1998.  The reason for this choice being limited to the first page of the Broadsheet will become evident as we move into the analysis of the newspaper and its interpretation of current affairs.

The written word can be a powerful and influential communicator.  Print journalism and the still image of photography have flowed in alliance and helped each other to capture and sensationalise audiences with their teamwork and interpretations, for a great part of our contemporary world.  The newspaper has been informing the public since the enlightenment era, none so much as in the last century where it has come into its element.

The Independent newspaper on the 17th of March 1998 displayed a number of headline stories.  The front page of any newspaper can capture an audience and lure it in to the realms of the inner pages.  It is for this reason that we will only examine the front page of this Broadsheet.

In any visual format it is important to have some sort of layout.  The mind likes to organise and distinguish different pieces of information.  The Independent captures it visual audience by breaking the information and features in to blocks of digestible imagery.  Moving down the page, the top of the paper is small captions, next to images that draw the eye towards them.  These captions are an indication to what you will find within the papers depths.  The title is in large font, distinguishing itself from the rest of the blocks of information by using size as a written ...
