Policy Issues in the United Kingdom

An ICT policy in the UK

UKONLINE was a government policy or iniative to enable everyone in the United Kingdom to make the best use of Internet technology. The UK government is working together with trade unions, industry, the voluntery sector, and consumer groups to make the United Kingdom a world leader in trade and commerce.

As part of the UKONLINE policy the government has also set up UK online centres which are distributed around the country and provide help to people who want to use the internet but don’t have access to a  computer at home.

At the government website  gaining access to public information is much easier whereas before it was very difficult. The Ukonline web site has been designed to be very easy to navigate because of the easy on scree icons to follow. This allows users to find governemnet information, find out about local services and get up to date news easily. When a person has difficult decisions to make such as moving home, starting a new primary or secondary school, retiring and considering new job prospects the “your life” section of the website provides invaluable advice on all these aspects of your life and hopefully it aims to help you make the right decision in your life.. There is also a section on the web site called “do it online” meaning that through this web site you could pay your bills, book a driving theory test, apply for a passport and even submit your tax return forms which makes this web site highly interactive. The quick find directory allows people to access whatever governmnet information they wish. They can access information about pension funds, student loans, NHS news etc. This is because the website provides 1000 links to other government web sites. The disadavantage to this policy is that not everyone has access to a PC or the internet therefore they will not be able to reap the full benefits Ukonline has to offer. Another disadvantage in setting up this policy is that the visually impaired may not be able to use the website. Ukonline has also caused a lot of controversy because it has used a £400.000 advertising budget since its launch in February 2001 which meant that more than 4 million of taxpayers money was spent on setting up the site
