Review of 'Moral Kombat and Computer Game Girls'
Helen Cunningham
During the last several decades, computer games have emerged as a new medium and are one of the most popular forms of entertainment, particularly among adolescents. Helen Cunningham discusses this new entertainment medium in her article.
There are three main aspects of computer games that Cunningham has discussed in her article these are: (1) children who are becoming addicted to computer games, which can affect their overall development; (2) violence and aggression in computer games; (3) the gender stereotyping within computer games and female game players.
It has been said that every day after school some teenagers will bury themselves in computer games at home or in arcades. They concentrate all their attention on computer games, with their hands operating busily. Children spend too much time on computer games, could do harm to their eyes, health and affect their school achievements. Also, playing computer games does not allow them to use their natural creativity. It may even lead to children committing crime in order to get money for the games.
It may seem like computer games are only being viewed in a negative way; however there are critics of the negative views, such as Cunningham who claim there are benefits to playing computer games. Some parents believe that it's better for a child to actively play computer games than to passively watch television. According to Cunningham's article, she claimed that there are many parents who she interviewed, that bought computer games consoles for their children, because they believed that an active enthusiasm for computer games would be the first step toward computer literacy. These days, children are becoming extremely computer literate and that's what their parents' want.
