    Para el año de 1636, el virrey Conde de Chinchón les indica a las autoridades de la Universidad la necesidad de la enseñanza médica. Así es como se empiezan a impartir las cátedras de Prima y Vísperas de Medicina a partir de 1638 y después de 50 años se incorpora la cátedra de Método de Galeno. Evidentemente la enseñanza de medicina en el Perú no era del todo adecuada, por lo que los médicos y cirujanos que eran instruidos en nuestra casa de estudios no eran buenos y la situación de salud del país era pésima, había pestes por todas partes y la tasa de mortalidad era muy alta.
