Ashley – Clinic! What for?
(Speaking very low and softly)
Maria – I had a pregnancy test done.
Ashley – Maria are you telling me you are pregnant?
Maria – Yes momma.
(Ashley is outraged with anger)
Ashley – I thought you told me you were not having sex?
Maria – I’m sorry momma, I made a mistake.
Ashley – You are right you made a mistaken horrible one, and now you are going to have to live with it. You just messed up your entire life. How are you going to finish school now Maria? Who is going to take care of this baby? Who is the father?
(Maria cries out again I’m sorry momma)
Maria – His name is Tyrell Carter, he is in the 11th grade at my school. He say……
(Ashley interrupts Maria)
Ashley – Well, what is he going to do? Who are his parents? They need to be notified about this situation. Maria I have had this conversation with you over and over, how could you let this happen? You know better. What was going through your mind?
Maria – I know momma, his momma name is Carla and his father name is Matthew they live at 4790 Barcelona Lane. Their phone number is 226-0957. I told Tyrell I was pregnant but he says the baby is not his.
Ashley – Well we will just see about that, let me put on my shoes. We are going over there.
Ashley drags Maria to the car and they start driving over to Tyrell’s parent’s home where they find Tyrell hugged up with another girl on the corner before his house.
Maria – That’s Tyrell right there momma.
(Ashley then pushes on the breaks real quickly and stops the car)
Ashley – Is your name Tyrell Carter?
Tyrell – Yes maim!
Ashley – Is your parents home because we all need to talk about the situation you and my daughter have gotten yourselves into.
Tyrell – Maria and I only had sex one time she can’t be pregnant for me.
Ashley – Child do you not know it only takes one time. Where are your parents?
Tyrell – They are in the house.
(Tyrell turns says goodbye to the girl and starts walking back to the house. Ashley and Maria walks up to the door and rings the doorbell. Carla opens the door. )
Ashley – Are you Mrs. Carter
Carla – Yes! Can I help you?
Ashley – My name is Ashley Dunn and this is my daughter Maria. We have a situation that needs our immediate attention. Can we please come in?
(Tyrell walks up and goes into the house)
Carla – Yes! Please come in. Hello Maria.
Maria – Hello Mrs. Carter
(Ashley and Maria goes in and be seated in the den where Tyrell is already sitting.)
Carla – What is this about?
Ashley – Tyrell and my daughter have been having sex and now she is pregnant.
Carla – Pregnant!
Ashley – Maria says Tyrell says the baby is not his.
Carla – Maria has been being here a lot while you are at work. Tyrell is what Mrs. Dunn says true?
Tyrell – Yes mama.
Carla – Maria how far along are you?
Maria – The doctor says three weeks.
Carla – Tyrell, what do have to say for yourself? I mean besides it is not yours because I know for a fact you and Maria have been spending a lot of time together. You guys are always here.
Tyrell – Momma we only had sex one time.
Carla – Tyrell it only takes one time. How do you plan to support a baby and go to school?
Tyrell – I don’t know momma. I don’t want a baby.
Carla – You should have thought about that before the two of you decided to have sex. Tyrell you have been told several times to use protection. You know better than that.
Tyrell – I know momma, I made a mistake.
Carla – Well this mistake is one you cannot take back. I assume Maria is going to have the baby Mrs. Dunn.
Ashley – Yes she is and she will have all the responsibilities of being a parent because I am only going to babysit for her to go to school and work. Maria will be taking this baby everywhere she goes.
Carla – Tyrell you will need to get a part time job and help this girl support this baby. You are not going to be asking me for money to take care of your responsibilities. This is you and Maria responsibility and its best you all come up with a solution on how you guys will work this out. I will help you guys but I will not be responsible for this child.
(Tyrell and Maria leaves the room to talk about the pregnancy.)
Analysis
The conversation between Ashley and Maria was about her being pregnant at the age of sixteen. Ashley,(Maria’s mother) was upset because she and Ashley had talked about sex and she wanted Ashley to come to her so she would be able to help her to protect herself.
Success of the conversation
Maria and Tyrell listened to their parents and they both understand that their actions will cost them dearly because they have to be responsible for the child they made together. Their parents are willing to help them, but they are not willing to raise their child.
If the scene were different
The conversation could have been different if the parents upheld the kids and took on the responsibility of raising their child. Tyrell’s mother could have stated she wanted to get a blood test done before her son take responsibility for a child that may or may not be his. The parents could have not agreed upon anything regarding this child.
