Introduction
"The role of values, including diversity, in my practice" Within my role as Probation Service Officer I constantly work towards and promote anti-discriminatory practice. I do not discriminate against people regardless of their age, sex, class or background. I feel that it is important in my practice to understand the meaning of diversity, knowing the differences between individuals and understanding that they should be valued and celebrated. The principles on which Probation practice is based have complex historical and contemporary sources. The contributions of religion must be acknowledged and of course the first probation practitioners, entitled Police Court Missionaries, proceeded from an explicit Christian ethical commitment. Values are a person's principles, standards or judgements of what is important in life. My own values can often influence my attitudes to different offences and offenders. However as a professional it is important I always adhere to the professional code of ethics. In my practice I often feel my own values are being challenged. I would like to point out a couple of examples I have come across in my work, but note there are obviously a lot more but only a couple can be mentioned. I was working with an offender that I had to breach because he was unable to provide evidence for two absences. He was very good at reporting and doing well on his order however he was finding it difficult getting evidence from his employer. ...read more.
Conclusion
However I had to put aside my own values and beliefs so that I could offer her appropriate support and information. It certain situations it is important that you have strong emotional resilience and know how to manage your feelings so that it doesn't get in the way of your work. Everyone must be treated in the same manner, with the same respect and it is important to realise that not every one will necessarily act in the same manner that we would or that we would want them to act. As practitioners, we are employed by the state and have to mirror society's values, criminal justice values and also professional values.
