According to Webster's dictionary, "knowledge is the fact or condition of knowing something with familiarity gained through experience or association". In companies though, knowledge is the ideas or understandings, which the company possesses and which is used to take effective action to achieve the company's goals.1

Every organisation has knowledge based core competencies and capabilities - the things that are called knowledge assets. The knowledge assets have to be created, gathered, stored and disseminated effectively within the organisation in order to help the employees use them effectively and efficiently - and this is one of Critical Success Factors of an organisation. Best practices also have to be documented within them.

Every employee in an organisation has both tacit and explicit knowledge. The knowledge which resides within employees and is ingrained within them is called tacit knowledge. This knowledge is very difficult to teach and profess. But explicit knowledge is detached from the person and can be easily expressed. All these types of knowledge can be summarised in the knowledge base of the organisation which should be easily accessible by all employees.
