The work of the government is a very complex business and as such it is divided among various Departments which each specialise in a particular area e.g. trade and industry, defence, health. The minister in charge of a Department is usually a member of the cabinet also. They are usually assisted by one or more junior ministers who have a variety of titles. Some of the more senior are known as Ministers of State, other as Parliamentary Under-Secretaries of State or Parliamentary Secretaries. The majority of Ministers belong to the House of Commons, but major departments often have at least one Minister who is a member of the House of Lords, who will then be able to answer any question raised there.

The main functions of the various departments are normally found in their titles - e.g. Ministry of Defence, Department of Health. More specifically, the Treasury for example is responsible for formulating and putting into effect the UK Government's financial and economic policy.
