The work of the government is a very complex business and as such it is divided among various Departments which each specialise in a particular area e.g. trade and industry, defence, health. The minister in charge of a Department is usually a member of the cabinet also. They are usually assisted by one or more junior ministers who have a variety of titles. Some of the more senior are known as Ministers of State, other as Parliamentary Under-Secretaries of State or Parliamentary Secretaries. The majority of Ministers belong to the House of Commons, but major departments often have at least one Minister who is a member of the House of Lords, who will then be able to answer any question raised there.

The main functions of the various departments are normally found in their titles - e.g. Ministry of Defence, Department of Health. More specifically, the Treasury for example is responsible for formulating and putting into effect the UK Government's financial and economic policy. Also the management of central governmental budgets
