This is essay will include what stress is, how it is caused and its different effects on the body and the mind and how the body responds. I am going to evaluate and analyse the General Adaptation syndrome described by Hans Selye.
Stress is a combination of external stressors and our response or the physical and psychological strain we experience as a result. There are a number of causes of stress which may vary due to the age of the individual, the type of environment they are within, the different kinds of people they are around, etc.
The General adaptation syndrome (GAS) describes the bodily response of non specific short-term and long-term reaction to stress. It was originally described by Hans Selye. After doing experiments with rats he published his first article on the effects of stress. The GAS consists of 3 stages, alarm reaction, resistance and exhaustion). After the initial alarm reaction the individual adapts and returns to normal functioning. It is only after prolonged stress that exhaustion occurs.
