What is Political Science?

Who Has the Right to Rule?

By definition, Social Science is “The study of human society and individual relationships in and to society.” (Thefreedictionary) Unlike the Natural Sciences, the shear nature of social science and its sub-disciplines create hazy and ambiguous lines of separation between those areas of study. One of those sub-disciplines is Political Science. Political Science is a very broad and far reaching study of theory, policy and relationships, all relative to politics. This work will take a negative position that simply put, “The study of Political Science revolves around the fundamental question of: who has the right to rule.”

While certainly one fundamental aspect of political science is the study of Government and consequentially who should govern. Political Theory, whether democratic or authoritarian in nature; represents only a small portion of the overall study of political science. Furthermore, Political Theory would seem to more appropriately focus on how the people will be ruled, rather than who has the right to rule. Our great country just recently completed one of the most fascinating Presidential election processes in history. Regardless of the outcome of that said election, the governmental mechanics of the legislative, the judicial, and the executive branches of government would have been the same. This is because the question of how the people will be ruled, takes precedence over who will actually rule. Also it is noted that “who will rule” is somewhat of a different question than “who has the right to rule.” Who will rule is primarily an objective question, where as “who has the right to rule” is more or less a subjective question based on ethical foundation. One example of this ethical dilemma of who has the right to rule is found even in our own constitution. The original ideas of our founding forefathers called for the voting populous to be only land owners. (Wikipedia) One can only imagine that this idea was introduced by those who probably owned land.  Although the concept of a government” for the people” and “by the people” sounds noble and ethical; it was also self serving, and exclusive in nature. Did our forefathers really have the right to make these decisions? This is a question of ethical and moral subjectivity.

In all societies, the government enacts laws, makes policy, and allocates resources. Public policy is essentially a system of laws. This system of laws, which is designed to enforce legislative courses of action and funding priorities concerning a given issue, is promulgated by the government. One example of the enforcement of these laws is the Internal Revenue Service. The IRS is authorized to set the Federal tax code according ...
