Even Now there is still continuing conflicts between Nationalists and Unionists in Northern Ireland.

The two views on what causes conflict in Northern Ireland are that it is a religious conflict between Protestants and Catholics or that it is a political conflict between the remaining part of the UK and Independent rule.

The Unionists are mostly Protestant and wish to remain part of the UK. The extremist groups linked to them are called Loyalists. Nationalists are mostly Catholic and want Ireland to be ruled independently. The extremist groups linked with them are called Republicans.

There is American involvement in Northern Ireland; however this is not something new. It is known for supplying mainly finance and arms to certain groups in which they support such as the IRA in the 1990s to try and carry out peace.

Another move which reopened old wounds and the resentment of victims' families who have felt that the action is unreasonable is the litigious issue of the early release of prisoners who have been convicted of terrorist acts. This concern was brought to the forefront with the closing of the well-known prison to accommodate these convicts; the Maze Prison. There is an article in the Telegraph stressing this matter dated 17th September 2000. "Ulster Unionists are also infuriated by the way Mr Adams produced a list of 41 people for whom he wants amnesty from prosecution. The list is said to include IRA suspects wanted for such atrocities as the Enniskillen Poppy Day bombing and attacks on army bases in Germany and Northern Ireland."

A key issue that has been mounting tension is the marching season. Orange marches take place every July by the orange order which is a group that wants to keep the protestant religion and the Unionists culture in Northern Ireland. They hold marches to celebrate William of Orange who led the famous victory at the battle of Boyne. The Orange order marches contributes to the tension between Catholics and Protestants in Northern Ireland. The reason why there is tension at these marches is because they march through Catholic areas and the Catholics don't like this because they feel like they are being insulted. Recently they have been stopped by police but the Orange order have been camping out by the road and have been attacking the police.

The following factors might be important reasons for the continuing conflicts between Unionists and Nationalists in Northern Ireland.

Battle of the Boyne 1688 - 1689 is probably the most well-known date in Irish history because during this time the 'Battle of the Boyne' took place. William III had a victory over James II at the River Boyne, a small number of miles west of Drogheda. The battle was fought between the army of the English King James II who had been pushed off the throne and his successor William of Orange, William III. James had gone to Ireland in his attempt to get aid in getting the English throne back. The Catholic force under James had 25,000 men and they had a go at blocking the path of William's army of 36,000 men at the River Boyne. William was deep in the battle and won the battle against James who fled the battlefield earlier on, due to this he was seen as a coward. In the bloodless "Glorious Revolution" of 1688 James had lost the throne of England. The battle was significant because it gave the protestant minority in Ireland the chance to have authority over the Catholic Majority. When this happened the Catholics were treated very harshly by the Protestants after the battle and had their land taken away. The Catholics really resented this but the Catholic control continued until Ireland was split and the South made free. Because of this the Protestants believe that William is a hero and rescued them from being taken out of Ireland. They commemorate the Battle of the Boyne because they believe it gave Protestants control. This has led to conflict between Unionists and Catholics because the Catholics might want to retaliate after how they were treated by the Protestants back then. It is also thought to be the reason why Republican violence started.

The Orange Order hold marches every July to celebrate William of Orange's victory. They are a protest group who were founded in 1775. They believe in keeping the protest religion and Unionist culture in Northern Ireland. Problems occur because some of the marches are through Catholic areas which results to trouble. When the Protestants march they carry banners and play music with pictures of William. This makes Catholics feel like they are being insulted. Lately the police have got involved and last time the police stopped marches going along the Catholic Garvaghy road but the protest group camped ...
