Analyse and review the use of docudrama in the film "let him have it" Write as a media critic for a broadsheet

The case of Derek Bentley which happened in 1953 was one which caused disruption and immorality in the British justice system. The decision that was passed for Derek was one of the most controversial decision which a British court has ever decided on. The director Peter Medak interpretation of "let him have it" is based solely on the events of Bentley's case. The docudrama itself comes across as a compelling and sensitive film and is definitely one in which it moves the audience. It is also very convincing, however the reliability of it is debatable.

Derek Bentley was hanged on the 28th January 1953 after being convicted of the murder of PC Sidney Miles. Nevertheless, the reason why his case was so and still is so controversial is the fact that Bentley himself never caused anything physical harm to murder the police officer. The person that fired that fatal blow was Derek's troublesome friend, Christopher Craig, a local youth of Sixteen.

The docudrama tells the story of the forlorn, illiterate and vulnerable Bentley who is lead into a life in which he did not wish for. "Let him have it" begins with Bentley's early life, starting with his childhood. Bentley's character is one of whom has no social life and is poorly educated. Bentley is also epileptic. The audience feel great sympathy towards Bentley due to his lonely and inadequate life. However, Madek's own portrayal of Bentley is debatable to whether the character is a accurate illustration of what the real Derek Bentley was like and what his life was like. The reason why Madek has directed Bentley as he did was because he wanted to emotionally move the audience to be in favour for Derek.

One of the main, critical scenes in the film is the one on the rooftop of a warehouse. The two boys, Bentley and Craig, are at the warehouse is because they had intended to burgle it; it is also the warehouse where PC Miles is shot dead. There are various techniques used in this scene to create effects such as sympathy for Derek. Firstly, there are a wide range of camera angles which are focused mainly upon Derek instead of Chris. This is because the director is focused on getting the audience on Derek's side, to do this the angles used focus upon Derek's eyes and facial expressions, these make out that Derek is the innocent one and also it shows the distress which is stricken upon Derek. When the crucial phrase "Let him have it Chris!" this is a close up shot on Derek revealing a strong array of emotion , it reveals panic and fear. By doing this it conjures the audience into believing that when Bentley said "Let him have it chris!" it was for Craig to handover the gun and not to shoot the police officer dead.

Lighting and music are also used seldom, yet effectively in this rooftop scene. The roof of the warehouse has little light cast upon it and there is hardly any sound used whilst they are on top of it. The reason these effects are used it to create an eerie atmosphere. It also creates a certain tension in which is a build up to the critical event in the film. It is also critical for the audience for them to choose on whether they're on Bentleys side. The silence in that scene is also essential in swaying the audience.
