Look carefully at plate 1.3.24, Cezannes Jug and Fruit (1885-87), and Plate 1.3.30, Zurbarans Still Life with Lemons, Oranges and a Rose (1633). In no more than 500 words, outline what you think are the main differences between them.

Cezanne on the other hand uses a narrow tonal range, where the differences between light and dark are minimal and the light source seems to come from the upper right, but not as strong as in Zurbaran’s painting. Cezanne’s picture has calmer and more peaceful effects. Both artists choose the same gender, Still Life. Although there are some differences, Zurbaran chooses lemons and oranges as a subject for his work and Cezanne choose apples and pears. The linear perspective for these two paintings are diverse, Cezanne’s fruits are painted bigger on the picture plane, giving the sense that the spectator can actually touch the fruits on the canvas, while on Zurbaran’s painting he uses the picture’s space to give the sense of depth between the virtual world and the viewer, as if the viewer could stand in front of the painting and still have the sense of distance between him and the fruits. The delineation is also different, in Zurbaran’s painting. We can see all the details on his picture, as if it was a photograph, the shadows, the lighting and the reflection of the lemons on the silver plate, the details of the basket with the oranges; while Cezanne’s painting is a more expressive piece of art where the fruits look very solid. The brushwork that the two artists used is another clearly visible difference, Zurbaran uses a linear brushwork leaving his picture with a crispy, neat ending, where the brushstrokes are only visible under close examination. In Cezanne’s work, he uses a painterly brushstroke giving a more expressive effect and where the brushstroke is clearly visible on the canvas.  Also these two artists were working in different times; Zurbaran painted Still life with Lemons, Oranges and a Rose in 1633, 200 years before Cezanne. Zurbaran was a traditionalist, his paintings were more realistic and his aim was to portray the world on canvas. On the other hand Cezanne disapproved everything that came from the traditionalists, as he mention in a letter that he wrote to his mother, saying that he had to work hard in order not to give his paintings the final perfection (Book 1, Reputations, p.67).
