Title: Grade 11 Job Shadow Report

Terms of reference: I attended Gen Re Re-insurance Company for 3 days with a view to find out more about a career in Actuarial Science.

Procedure:

Day 1 of the work shadow began at 9am. I was received by the receptionist, Mrs Cecilia Matthews. I was promptly introduced to Ms Kelly Franks. She is an Actuary that specialised in Healthcare and is in charge of Gen Re’s marketing unit. She was assigned as my ‘mentor’ for the duration of our time there. Later, shown around the offices, after which she took me to meet the various Actuaries I would be shadowing in the next few days. After lunch (at 1pm), I was taken to the Actuarial Technical Specialist, Mr Mark Lewis, in the Product Development Unit where I spent the rest of my day trying to understand the various complex insurance calculations and statistics. Tea was taken at 3pm and I left at 5pm.

Day 3 was started with pretty much the same routine as the first two days. ...
