"A Doll's House" essay. How you would perform the role of Dr Rank in his first and final appearance

How you would perform the role of Dr Rank in his first and final appearance in order to highlight how the character develops over the course of the play?

In the first scene that Dr Rank appears in, his purpose is to highlight his illness to the audience. Therefore I would act his role to gain sympathy from the audience for his illness by walking with a hunched back to portray his spinal injury and constantly checking my pocket watch to show that time is running out. Also on the line “However dreadful I feel, I want to prolong the agony as long as possible”, I would attempt to raise my neck and pull my shoulders back to show courage and a fighting spirit, but portray my physical impairment of injury to the spine to make me unable to do so, conveying the message that although his spirit isn’t ready to die, his body is giving up on him.

Although in the first scene my character Rank appears, his purpose is to visit Helmer, he then seems to fit in well with Nora and Miss Linde and begins to gossip, saying “Krogstad his name is. No one you know. Totally depraved” which conveys he has a closer relationship to Nora than Torvald, because he visits Torvald normally on business, whereas he is very informal and gossips with Nora.

I would also show Dr Rank to have a close bond with Nora, by saying the line “He is here. Say it” with a light tone of voice and in a whisper to portray their private joke and to use the language as a means of teasing Nora rather than forcing her to say it. The image of teasing is also used later on throughout the play when Nora says to Dr Rank “And tomorrow you’ll see how nicely I dance. You can pretend it’s all for you- Well for Torvald too” I would show Nora to be manipulative and ...
