Q. How do Blair Witch Project and Whistle and I’ll Come To You Scare Their Audiences?

The two horror films, The Blair Witch Project (a pretended real horror footage) and Whistle and I’ll Come To You (BBC’s Arts Programme Omnibus), contrast in many ways, in terms of Scariness, and how they frighten their audiences. Whistle and I’ll come to You starts with a man named Parkins, who throughout the film is shown to be Lonely and Boring whereas the more modern film The Blair Witch Project starts with a group of teenagers exploring the woods for a witch. Although Whistle and I’ll Come To You has the more artistic view of horror, it has many features that allow it to appeal in such ways, whilst The Blair Witch Project is more modern therefore, easier to interpret. This essay will explain in media perspective, on how the two films scare their audiences.

The Narrative in both films, are similar, completely unusual and pretty simple, because in Whistle and I’ll Come To You, there isn’t much of a storyline. M.R James the writer demonstrates the storyline basically by showing how boring Parkins life is, because of his loneliness. This adds tension, because it makes the audience want to know what is going to happen next. Whistle and I’ll Come To You also is an old ghost story and is pretty unrealistic. The Blair Witch Project varies completely to this, because it is more modernised and is totally original, no other horror film had been visualised enough to be the same as this. It is set in the forest, where they experience a witch haunting them. This is also pretty unrealistic but is put in a way to make the audience think it’s true. This adds upon the tension on the audience.

Horror films are enjoyed a lot today, because Audiences are prepared to suspend their disbelieve, and make believe. This brings out all the excitement, for people to explore beyond boundaries they face.

The great use of Characterisation in the two films plays a big part, because it shows each characters personality and who they are as a person. We can compare the two Protagonists from both films, Heather and Parkins, because although they’re protagonists, they don’t really share certain similarities. Heather is the cockier type, and doesn’t really care, what she says, whereas Parkins is the more quiet type to keep himself to himself, but one thing they both have in common is that they are both like exploring. We see this in both films because Parkins explores the beach area when he is on holiday, and Heather explores the forest with her friends. If we look at how Heather is presented in The Blair Witch Project it is not very realistic, because Heather in the forest is just like asking for more after they get haunted, because she keeps investigating.

Parkins presentation is quite realistic, because it makes the audience wonder if he is mentally ill or just mad! Parkins isolation is well illustrated when Parkins is in the dining room and the camera is leading up to him on his own. Heather becomes more segregated from her friends as the film moves on. They blame her for getting them lost because she won’t stop filming. She explains that things seem less real from behind the camera. This show scariness, because it makes us the audience wonder if anything is going to happen.
