Abrupt changes in act three and the effect on the audience

In act three there are many abrupt changes, as well as much turmoil of emotions. This act is essentially an emotional roller coaster.

One of the main abrupt changes is that of Leontes, he expresses great belief in the oracle. He says, “Great Apollo will have the truth,” he claims he is willing to base the verdict of the trail on what the oracle says. He also says, “A just and open trial,” but he turns it into a shambles, as he basically decides the verdict by himself. Going back to the oracle, after expressing his utter belief in the oracle he changes his mind on the validity on the oracle when it doesn’t conform this his ideals.

The audience will have generally of shared this view so they would of jeered at him, recognizing the insult at the king. The audience would boo and hiss at Leontes when he would be on stage, they would in no way support him, as he is the hate figure for a good proportion of the story. The audience would express their anger at the fact that he was having his own daughter put out into isolation. The general effect of Leontes is that he would provoke a reaction from the audience, most often a bad one.
