When you switch from world to world you never get confused as the three worlds are so different and you can see the difference straight away.
Peter Weir lets us know that Truman is being secretly filmed by using various different camera shots. Peter Weir uses unusual angles to create tension and suspense through out the film. Peter also used oval shots to make it look like Truman was being spied and filmed. Peter used different shots for different reasons for example when something was being advertised he used a close up shot to promote the product more. Peter also did mist around the screen if there was a flashback, so that the audience knew exactly what was happening.
The three worlds are brought together in the ‘break for freedom’ sequence at the end with tension and anxiety.
Throughout the film the three worlds have there destined differences, they were always separated and never came together. But at the end even though the production team didn’t want Truman to leave they came together with the real world wanting Truman to leave.
The break for freedom scenes comes together when Truman suspects that he is being secretly filmed. He then tries to escape in a boat, however the production team eventually manage to locate him and try everything to stop Truman leaving i.e. thunderstorm, etc…. Christof is even prepared to kill Truman and said, “He was born in front of a live audience he can die in front of a live audience”.
Truman survives all that and then reaches the end of the fake sea. When Truman reaches that stairs come up from the water and Truman begins to climb them. When he gets to the top Christof talks to him, his voice come through the sky like he is God. Christof talks to him like a friend, his voice is soft and he says things like “ in my world you have nothing to fear” and “ you belong here with me”. Truman listens to everything Christof has to say and then when Christof says, “say something, you’re on TV! You’re live to the whole world” Truman reply’s “if I don’t see you then good afternoon good evening and good night” he then goes through the door and leaves the fake world.
In the ‘break for freedom’ scene music is played it is emotional and makes you feel like the end has finally come.
In this film I think Peter Weir is trying to show us that something like this is possible and that it can be done.
When Truman has to make the choice for freedom the point I think Peter Weir is trying to make is the fact that Truman now knows the truth and has a right to make the decision on what he does, meaning as much as they have controlled his life (to a certain extended) he as a person has the right like everyone else to leave when he wants and that is what Truman decided to do.
Another point peter is trying to make is now people feel that they need this show to live they buy products of the show and products which are advertised and they keep the television on 24/7 this shows how as a society we are nosey and want to know about other peoples life.
I think Christof’s name is quite significant as he does act like a God (Christ) to Truman and I think a perfect example to that is at the end of the film when he (Christof) talks through the clouds at Truman. When Christof talked to Truman they used special effects to make it more like a God like figure with the echoing of his voice and how Christof himself talked softly and slowly to make an impact.
Christof is also like God to the rest of the actors because he tells them what to do and they always turn to him when they become stuck for example when Truman goes missing Christof sends Truman’s best friend round and his best friend is always looking to the camera for instructions.
I think Peter Weir has made the character more like a God figure with now Christof acts because he is emotionally attached to the show and would try anything to keep Truman there, as the show is his life.
I don’t agree with what they have done to Truman because even though they say Truman can leave when ever he wants he doesn’t know that he is being filmed so why should he even thing he can leave.
If producer want to do something like the Truman show I think the person has a right to know.
