Text Transformation Nothing. Nothing whatsoever. Nothingness. The ill fitting flowered curtains, thin and frayed, danced sadly in the wind as the old man slipped in and out of his vacant dreams. His wrinkled, grey expression remained inert and morose. Time goes by and his sizeable feet land on the ground and pace the carpeted floor without excitement or purpose. His toes guided him towards the stiff, upright chair similar to its electric variety. From where he sat he could see a narrow strip of the tussocky land outside. Legs running in and out of view. A dog. A child's bicycle. Litter blowing aimlessly over coarse grass. This at least distracted him from the thin floral curtains. His limbs bent and ached into a sitting position. Slow fingers gripped ordinary shoes. Shoes that didn't attract attention. Layer upon layer of starchy cotton engulfed his sagging skin like a body bag. Ringless fingers that declared to an uninterested world that he was alone, dropped onto the brass door handle, which took him into a happy, mocking world. "Why Mr Bleaney, on time as usual! Why do I ask! What can I get ya lovey? The usual? Okay porridge no sugar, tea no sugar? Ya don't need it, you're sweet enough aint ya! Attempted conversation was Mrs Valentine's speciality. Her over made face and pink and green frock glared at the old man. "Please" he repeated monotonously. He stared at the

of mice and men

Of mice and men essay In 'Of mice and Men' several characters dream of a different and better life. Why is it not a surprise that the dreams never come true? 'Of Mice and Men is a novel written by john Steinbeck that features the hopes and aspirations of ordinary people living very simple lives. It features very strong characters each with their own dreams of a different and better life. But of course such dreams only remain dreams because they never do come true. The title 'of mice and men' is taken from a poem by a famous Scottish poet Robert Burns that quotes. The beat laid schemes o' mice and men Gang aft agley (often go wrong) And leave us nought but grief and pain For promised joy! This basically means that it doesn't matter how much you plan and dream, things very rarely go according to plan, which leaves us longing for promised dreams. John Steinbeck was born in Salinas, California in 1902. This may have been the reason he decided to set the novel 'Of mice and men' in the Salinas valleys. It was hard to live in good conditions around the time the book was set (1930-1940) because of the Wall Street crash and the great Depression that followed. It was extremely hard to get a job and if you did get a job, it would be for minimal pay. During the 1930's there was very bad unemployment, which meant thousands of people never had a job in the USA, so agencies (like

Short Story Analysis

After you, my dear Alphonse By: Adam Breitkopf "After you, my dear Alphonse" is a short story written by Shirley Jackson for the 'New Yorker' in 1943. The story was very popular at the time and explored many problems that the people faced in society at the time, racism. It had a very straightforward theme; don't make assumptions on how someone looks. "After you, me dear Alphonse" is about a young boy named Johnny and his friend, named Boyd, who he brought home one afternoon for lunch. Boyd is in fact African-American. Johnny's mum, who is known only as Mrs. Wilson, has just finished baking gingerbread for lunch when she yells out for Johnny to come inside and eat. Johnny brings along his friend Boyd as well. Upon Mrs. Wilson meeting Boyd she realises that he is African-American, and then her attitude changes. Johnny and Boyd act naturally with each other, but Johnny's mum consistently inquires about Boyd's family, and without hesitation. Mrs. Wilson seems very sweet and innocent but later shows a prejudice towards African-Americans. As the boys are eating lunch, Mrs. Wilson starts making assumptions on Boyd. "There's plenty of food here for you to have all you want...Boyd will eat anything" she said, assuming that Boyd's family are poor and that they couldn't afford to eat. So never stops to think that maybe Boyd's family are different. Although this seems plain to the

Original Writing

Original Writing Yay! Another blissful day at school, (hint my sarcasm). I hate the way the bell assaults my ears in the morning, especially when I have to attend this "temple" of learning. (As I like to call it). I should really be on my way to registration but I like the thought of walking slowly, gives me time to think, to think what the day might bring, but I like the thought of walking slowly and being late, after all it is only Mr Miles reading out notices that don't concern or interest me in any shape or form. Its only Thursday, I have actually managed to last most of the week in this "temple" of learning. Most of the teachers aggravate me in ways that are indescribable but I cope, though at times they have drove me to the end of my infinite patience! First lesson is art, I enjoy art it's the only subject where I can let my anger, aggression and what are really think of people out without thinking before I speak actually without even having to speak. I love to put a lot of effort into my art I'm very passionate about it, there's so much depth to it and it's the only lesson I really do enjoy. For second lesson I have support also known as CLS. In there they treat me as some sort of invalid, I hate it! The only reason I'm in there is to catch up with my coursework, and before you ask, the reason I didn't do my coursework is because I was unable to do it, due to the

Original Writing Coursework

I always knew I was different, but it wasn't until I hit the 4 or 5 mark, when I first started interacting with other children my age, that I realised I wasn't normal, and in this culture, not being normal, was bad. I started to realise I was unique in lots of small situations, such as in class the teachers would ask us if we knew the answer, the other children would comply and quite often get it wrong. How often I lay awake wondering, if they could do what I do, would there be any need for this? Is it all a sham? That was when the paranoia set in, the endless tumbling or random thoughts in my mind as they swirled around questioning every flicker in another persons eye, every dodgy look sent my way was examined analysed and pondered. At such a young age of course this had a negative impact on me, and I was very much alone in that place, as the other children avoided me because in my own way I shunned them, alienated them, to afraid to get to close to them, to insecure really, all because of this, this 'gift' I had. If I was a second rate charlatan, in some country fete that sat in the back of a dark tent with a scrap of cloth across my eyes, I would claim I could read minds, and then it would be a case of off I go to the mental hospital; "Hello miss, I can read your mind, and I know just how much you despise us and if you had your way you would hang us from the third

Macbeth

Macbeth Who is responsible for the murder of king Duncan? The story of Macbeth dates back to around 1000 years ago. Shakespeare wrote this play in 1606 around this time a lot of things had happened to influence what Shakespeare wrote in the play Macbeth. One of the main events that persuaded Shakespeare to write the play was in 1605 when a man named Guy Fakes had plotted to kill king James and all the members of parliament by blowing up the house of parliament. This was known as the gunpowder plot, Shakespeare had been aware of this incident and was a close friend of the king so decided to write a play called Macbeth about the death of a king. At the begging of the play we are introduced to three witches, Shakespeare thought to and witches because in those days a lot of people believed in things like witchcraft even king James himself. These withes turn out to be a main part of the play because most people would say they are the main reasons to why Macbeth decided to kill the king. Another vital character in the kings death is Macbeth's with Lady Macbeth who taunts and emotionally blackmails Macbeth into killing the king some will say she was the main reason behind Macbeth killing. Other people would say it was Macbeth's greed that leads him to kill the king. The witches maybe to blame for Macbeth killing king Duncan because the witches had predicted that Macbeth would

English short story.

The calmest day of summer so far, has finally reached the peaceful town of Bikaly, and a drowsy silence swept over the empty streets. A gentle breeze rushed its way between the surroundings, causing the trees to sway lazily from side to side, its leaves parching yellow from the drought that had left only a few days before this beautiful day. The silence though was very soon broken by a long black limo, which drove swiftly up the quite road, causing echoes to shift around the streets that the limo had past. A young girl, about fifteen years of age gazed excitedly yet impatiently out of the limo's open window, her beautiful brown hair dashed with the wind, caused by the speed. "Are we nearly there?" she young girl asked, her voice soft and gentle. "Nearly there, Miss Cassandra," the driver beamed, somehow finding her impatiens amusing. "Just around that corner," he pointed his stubby finger at the road sign that read Comirwod Street and gave her yet another warm smile. The limo turned on to Comirwod Street and parked right before a beautiful cream coloured house, which told Cassandra she had finally arrived. Excitedly, she shot out of the car, her backpack in her right hand and yelled out her goodbye to the driver so quickly that her words were unclear, though he didn't seemed very much bothered by that, and instead gave a small wave, which was completely unnoticed, for

In what ways is the environment of your country threatened

In what ways is the environment of your country threatened? Propose measures and solutions. Our survival depends on how well we handle our environment. The term environment refers to mountains, land, seas, oceans, forests and rivers. It also includes men, animals and plants. Mauritius, being a small country, is prone to many environmental hazards. Environmental pollution has become a great menace to man. Our environment is threatened in many ways including modernization, industrialization, deforestation, urbanization, agriculture, transport and travel and tourism. Measures and solutions are being taken to reduce them as eliminating them is impossible. The rapid growth of population is the most important cause in the imbalance of our environment. The larger the population, the greater the facilities and resources are required. Mauritius, being on of the small islands developing state is limited in size and resources. The demands of the population are increasing day by day and this is causing harm to our surroundings. There is not much space available for agriculture. If the growth is not checked, the pollution will get worsened. Modernization and industrialization in a tiny country like ours are having harmful effects on the environment. There is no proper zoning system in the country. The setting up of industries anywhere is giving rise to all types of

Romeo and Juliet

Romeo & Juliet The tragedy of Romeo and Juliet was pre-ordained by fate there was nothing that any of the characters could do to prevent their deaths. Fate is a thing that nobody can run hide or escape from it is just going to happen. The author refers to things like "star cross'd lovers". This shows the reader that they were "made" to fall in love and death mark'd love which suggests that they were made to die if they fell in love, which is also a warning of what might happen. However, there are also references to 'ancient grudge' and to 'parents rage' which suggests that it is not only fate that has a part in their deaths but also human intervention. Actually the part played by some of the characters directly resulted in the deaths of the two principal characters. Romeo's friend, Benvolio, has a great deal to answer for. He knew perfectly well that it was wrong to gate crash Lord Capulet's party. He must have known that the discovery of his friend's presence there would cause serious disquiet, especially to Tybalt. Nevertheless, he encouraged Romeo to go because he had become morbid after his break up with Rosaline and therefore needed cheering up by meeting other girls and as such compare his "lady's love against some other maid That I will show you shining at this feast," (Act 1, Scene 2, lines 97 and 98). We know that the party was a masquerade, but the probability
