Ernest Hemingway’s classical novel, A Farewell to Arms was released in 1929 depicting a man’s journey in the First World War. This novel is a semi-autobiography of Hemingway. The protagonist, Frederic Henry, is actually a representation of Hemingway. Hemingway was an ambulance driver in the war, just like Frederic Henry. Hemingway wrote this novel based on his experience and his opinions on war. He was a man who opposed war, and therefore portrayed this through the theme of futility of war in his novel.

An important aspect of this novel is the complexity of love. Barkley and Henry’s relationship is not romantic, and is merely a game of seduction at first, but soon develops towards the end. Hemingway’s inspirations in writing of love came from his own affair back in World War I. Hemingway fell in love with a nurse named Agnes von Kurowsky. Hemingway’s portrayal of theme in the novel is extremely different from other authors. He is very concise and does not describe their relationship in a romantic way. Their relationship is, according to Hemingway, a game of seduction and just a fad to pass time during the war.

Hemingway expresses his philosophy that everyone will eventually die an unfair death through the use of his main character, Frederic Henry. Henry is surrounded by circumstances in which many people would never want to find themselves; the harsh realities of fighting in war, observing cruel circumstances to friends, and losing a loved one. These events happen to him to make him believe that all of life is just an unfair game. This unfairness of life observed by Frederic Henry motivates him and develops him into a better person.
