The tensions are very obvious, because in that part of the plot everyone knows what happened to Mary and what is the relationship among the family members. Like in the beginning James Tyrone doesn’t want to be with Jamie in the same room, and later their conversation full of anger and hatred, these acts are revealing that they don’t like each other. Later on, when Mary comes into the room, the men stops talking, the air is frozen within a second and they are just staring at her. Mary is morphine addict, because she doesn’t like her family’s environment. The two boys Jamie and Edmund doesn’t like her either, Edmund tried to escape before she appeared in the scene.

James and Jamie hate each other, they don’t argue because of Edmund. He is the only member of the family who has been loved by everyone. He is always who stops the arguments. Jamie criticizes his parents, in the surface he seems to like his brother. Mary does not argue with anyone, in addition, she doesn’t want to take in account the truth concerning the family’s problems.

The atmosphere is usually sour and pessimistic during the scene. They cannot change Mary’s state of morphine. They don’t want to face the problems instead they accept it how it is.

This scene is located in the last part of the fourth act, in the closing of the drama. This is the first scene when Mary’s morphine addiction becomes completely apparent. The men realising that she will never recover from this addiction and the sad end when they just trying to ignore her by drinking.

That part of the plot contains many stage directions due to the greater importance of gestures and mimics. Their sadness turns up through their gestures and voice tones, without them the play would lost many of its meaning. The reader can get a better image of the scene and it also helps the directors. These stage directions provide the difference in Eugene O’neills works to the other dramawriters.
