The pope is the leader of the Roman Catholic Church, he works with the cardinals and the bishops to decide upon dogmas through the magesterium. It is the pope’s job to translate the scriptures and tradition to modern day Christians. Early Bishops of Rome were called vicar of Peter, which meant representative of Peter. For later popes the Vicar of Christ was substituted as it was more authoritive title.

Some people would say that only the Pope is needed and there is no need for other people to help him. This is because the pope is infallible when he speaks ‘ex cathedra’. He is only possessed of infallibility when he defines a doctrine concerning faith and morals to be held by the whole Church, through the divine assistance promised to him by St Peter. This means he cannot make mistakes so there would be no need for others to help him. Also if he was elected as pope the cardinals would have a lot of faith in him so ...
