Angela Carter is someone known to take elements from fairy tales and turn them into well written, exciting, compelling complex dramas of a Gothic nature filled with sexual innuendo, a combination of different narrations (mainly first and third), strong heroic female characters and the evil villain - the male. "The Bloody Chamber" is a modern interpretation of the "Blue Beard" (character below) fairy tale which uses this very formula to create an exciting and dramatic story. In a nutshell both stories are about young women (in their late teens, on the verge of turning into womanhood) who marry a wealthy man and leave a life of modesty behind them. It is not only essential to understanding Hamlet's character, it forms the structure for the whole play, supporting and overlapping other important themes that arise. Though it is Hamlets revenge that forms the basis for the story, tied into this is the vengeance of Laertes and Fortinbras, whose situations in many ways mirror Hamlets' own. By juxtaposing these avengers, Shakespeare draws attention to their different approaches to the problem of revenge and how they resolve these. The idea of revenge is first introduced by the appearance of the ghost in act 1 Scene 5, and linked to this is the theme of hell and the afterlife. At the end of this scene, Hamlet is irreversibly bound to revenge for the duration of the play, 'speak, I am bound to hear' 'So art thou to revenge'. The ghost appears with the sole aim of using his son to obtain revenge on his brother, and so every word he speaks is designed to enrage Hamlet and stir in him a desire for vengeance. Wilfred Owen and Siegfried Sassoon are seen as the two greatest British First World War poets. 'Attack' and 'Anthem for Doomed Youth' attempt to dissuade young men to go to war and to stop them from 'dying as cattle' on the front. These views were not conventional. The British Government and the people on the Home Front were urging people to go to war and said it was 'a noble thing to die for your country. In these poems and many of their other poems Owen and Sassoon redefine war, from being a noble thing to die for you country to the poets mocking the war and describing the brutal reality of trenches and the Western Front. My piece challenges a highly held view on the influential exploitation of consistent sickening body images and false fabrication to how people should look, leading to outstanding statistics in the account of teenagers being diagnosed with anorexia. My article is straight away hit with 3 different rhetorical questions which are used to help the audience think about what they are about to read, it increases persuasion and message processing, creating a relatively strong, resistant attitude in the reader to obtain a greater importance into the article they are about to overlook. Starting off my first paragraph is the use of a declarative sentence which just generally states the facts that the urges people have to feel good about themselves is highly disintegrating to virtually nothing. COMPARATIVE COMMENTARY The first passage, "when I grow old", is a poem written by Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings in 1929. It describes how she will be living when she becomes an old woman, letting the reader know that she lived a "hurried life" and had many "busy days", and tries to compensate those years by living in "wisdom" and "peace". This poetic passage shows the reader that being an old person can be a good thing and that we shouldn't be afraid of it. On the other hand, the second passage, which is an adaptation from Malcolm Cowley's essay "The View" from 80, written in 1976, shows a different panorama. This prose extract narrates the bad things about being an old person, such as, among others, health problems. It shows the reader how to know to realise if he is getting old and how his behaviour will be. Both texts share a general audience as they are directed both to children, adults, and old aged people.
