Should the Death penalty be re-introduced?

Should the death penalty be reintroduced? The death penalty or execution is the sentence of death upon a person by the state as a punishment for an offence. Crimes that can result in a death penalty are known as capital crimes or capital offences. Execution of criminals and political opponents has been used by nearly all societies—both to punish crime and to suppress political dissent. In most places that practice capital punishment it is reserved for murder, espionage, treason, or as part of military justice. In some countries sexual crimes, such as rape, adultery, incest and sodomy, carry the death penalty. However in Great Britain the death penalty was abolished in the 1960’s with last executions taking place, by hanging, in 1964. Arguably there are cases which debate that the death penalty should be reintroduced however there’s also a counter argument in which cases argued are equally as rated. The death penalty shouldn’t be used for a variety of reason. Just one of them is the cost. Financial costs to taxpayers of capital punishment are several times that of keeping someone in prison for life. Most people don't realize that carrying out one death sentence costs 2-5 times more than keeping that same criminal in prison for the rest of his life. How can this be? It has to do with the endless appeals, additional required

General studies essay smoking ban

Public Smoking Ban In The UK Smoking is a major income to the government; it brings in about £10 billion pounds annually. The government has proceeded to raise the tax rate of tobacco above the inflation rate from 1993 to the present day, this was implemented to help reduce consumption further. This policy has resulted that tax on tobacco in the UK is amongst the highest in the world and far ahead of any of those in other EU member states. For example the price of a typical pack of cigarettes in the UK is currently £5.54, whilst in Belgium the price is about £2.70 and in Latvia they retail at a mere 42p. The cost to the NHS of smoking related illnesses is generally not believed to outweigh the income the government makes out of tobacco sales. The government is being very hypocritical of themselves because a large amount of public money comes from the tax of cigarettes but at the same time the government is trying to stop people form smoking by banning people to smoke in public places and also with adverts on television urging people to stop smoking. There has been a lot of opposition to the smoking ban of which the arguments have been that the ban will be disastrous to small pubs that rely on smokers to keep their business afloat. Small pub landlords have said that they will loose vital trade from people who normally go out to the pub to have a smoke and a pint who

Reflection on study This assignment will demonstrate a written reflective account highlighting how learning has progressed through the year. As part of this reflection I will have one written assignment from semester one and demonstrating an understanding of the tutor feedback. The assignment will also state how learning is influenced further. This will be done by reflecting upon my development as a learner, using effective range of learning resources, demonstrating the use of range of academic thinking skills and the academic practices at the academic level. The assignment taken from semester one is 'development'. Overall comments on assignment and specific recommendations for improving the work were given by the tutor. The main comment made by the tutor was that I have demonstrated understanding of basic concept and I would have achieved higher grade if I had explained the points effectively and showed a greater level of research and evidence. The reasons for not being able to demonstrate the concept effectively in an assignment are not having understanding of the essay question or title, the structure of the essay and not knowing which points to be make (Habeshaw & Gibbs 1995). According to Knight & Parsons "A clear, logical structure is essential to a good essay" (p.60, 2003) as this will help where and how to includes ideas in an assignment effectively. Another point

A103_TMA08 The Sixties

How useful is the term 'cultural revolution' when applied to the sixties? The sixties are definitely remembered by its generation as a time of significant change. Many associate the period fondly with memories of groups such as The Beatles and The Kinks, at the same time remembering the many protests and movements that hoped to change the ideas and values of society. In answer to whether the term 'cultural revolution' is useful when applied to the sixties, study of these disciplines is most certainly necessary. Despite the period of study being only a matter of decades from present day, we still face the same problems any historian would face given the same question applied to a time centuries ago. The validity of the sources is of utmost importance; fortunately in regards to the music of the sixties we have records from the time, and charts to show the popularity of groups and artists. In regards to the field of science, there is a great variety of primary source material due to the nature of the profession. One could safely assume that the documented research and findings were indeed accurate and reliable information from educated professionals. Science in the sixties is very much associated with protests, surprisingly not only by rebellious radicals but respected public figures and people at the top of their fields and professional careers. With figures such as

Decision Making Technique with Internet Reference

Decision Making Technique with Internet Reference Management 350 July 31, 2002 Decision Making Technique with Internet Reference The Decision Technique I chose to write about is the "Six Thinking Hats - Looking at a Decision from all Points of View." This technique was created by Dr. Edward de Bono. Dr. Bono is regarded as the leading international authority in conceptual and creative thinking and in the teaching of thinking as a skill. Of all the decision making technique I researched, this is the one that I agreed with the most in regards to the situation that I had in mind when researching decision making skills. This technique was very interesting to me because it made you look at a problem from all points of view. You could not be biased on one opinion or force of influence. It forced you to think outside the box. When making a decision, I feel that you must look at the issue from all points of view and not just your own biases or emotions. At times making a decision can be very hard, especially when you are the supervisor and responsible for your department. When both the decision and outcome it may have will ultimately affect you and your department and add the fact that you are the one that has to answer to higher authority. This is why I really think this technique is great because you incorporate how it will affect everyone around you from the

Socio-economic status as a bane

World Literature Assignment 1 Topic - Socio-economic Status as a bane "So Long a Letter" by Mariama Ba "Chronicle of a Death Foretold" by Gabriel Garcia "It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife" (Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen) This essay will look at Gabriel Garcia's Chronicle of a Death Foretold and Mariama Ba's So Long a letter in relation to the topic 'Social and Economic Status as a bane of women Empowerment'. Gabriel Garcia and Mariama Ba in their works have depicted women's eagerness for social and economic status to empower themselves. Women were shown to have gone as far as destroying their children's happiness for their own desires and satisfactions. For example a number of them have used their daughters by marrying them off to men in possession of a good fortune, regardless of what their daughters felt about the men. The women in the forefront who were in the lookout for social and economic status to empower themselves were Pura Vicario from Chronicle of a Death Foretold, Binetou's and Ramatoulaye's mothers and Aunty Nabou, from So Long a Letter. However there are a number of women which were portrayed differently, namely, Ramatoulaye and Aissatou in So Long a Letter, and Alberta Simonds in Chronicle of a Death Foretold. Women especially from especially lower class used their

Evil Surrounds Us

Kayla Gilbert Mr. Bain EAE 3U 22 December 2009 Evil Surrounds Us Evil causes harm to everyone surrounding us, including ourselves. Jealousy lies and crimes are all led by evil domination of the human spirit. In Lord of the Flies by William Golding, the plot consists of young boys stranded on an island. The boys deal with temptations, such as; hunger, thirst, hunting and killing. The group is quickly split in two when Jack decides he wants his own tribe (the Savages). The boys loose all their civilized knowledge. They follow only their personal needs and their common sense. This novel resembles the classical play by Shakespeare, Macbeth. Macbeth visits three witches who tell him his future; becoming king of Scotland. He puts his faith in the words and the prophecies of the witches, after their first prophecy comes true. With the help of his wife, Lady Macbeth, he plots many murders to assure that the prophecies will come true and to keep everything secret. Both stories deal with the progression of evil. Both children and adults are drawn to the evil side. They will do anything to get what they want, even if it means becoming murderers. Evil can escalade in transforming humans into savages. Every human being is drawn to the evil side, young or old. Evil is a common theme expressed in both Lord of the Flies and Macbeth. A person can be influenced due to his exposure to a

Legal and Political Factors That Affect Tescos.

D2 Legal Managing sickness absence ‘’A new service to help employers and employees manage long-term sickness absence has been launched by the DWP. The Health and Work Service is a free occupational health advice initiative that will help employees who have been, or are expected to be, absent from work due to illness for over four weeks return to work more quickly. Both GPs and employers will be able to refer employees to the Service, which will carry out an occupational health assessment and develop a plan including a timetable for a return to work. The DWP claims the Service, which is expected to be operational by April 2015, could cut the amount of sickness absence by 20% to 40%, saving employers a total of £70 million’’ This law is when workers who have an absence from work for being sick or ill. If their sickness last after four weeks of absence then they will receive a service of offering them free occupational health assistance for employees, employers and GPs. People are going to be off sick from time to time. But absence because of sickness, or another unexpected reason, can put your business in a tricky situation This employment law I think is a negative threat to Tesco because it puts the business down on the way they are performing for example the employee can lie about their absence for being off several weeks and still get paid for his excuse of

Symbolism for 19 Points

Kayla Gilbert Mr. Bain EAE 3U1 28 September 2009 Symbolism for 19 Points What happens when you hate your wife and you leave her fate in the hands of a game? Imaginative, unexpected, funny and intriguing, Death by Scrabble is appreciated by many readers. Charlie Fish, the author of this short story, uses symbolism to explain a couple's love statue through a game of scrabble. The story takes place in the couple's house, while a husband expresses the profound hatred he has for his wife. Although scrabble is usually am amusing game, in this story the game becomes reality. Death by Scrabble is seen as being very symbolic through things, actions and words. First of all, the board game and the game tiles are both examples of symbolic things used in this short story. Scrabble represents marriage. Nevertheless, this particular game is uninteresting and slow, which probably reflects the couple's relationship. This first symbol can already foreshadow a divorce. The two main characters seem to hate each other. The husband reveals his thoughts that are reflecting his hatred and willingness to kill his wife. They play a game to try and solve their misunderstandings. The game tiles or the letters symbolize their past and future events. Every word played reflects their reality. Their future is decided through the words their tiles make. ''The letters made it happen.'' The husband
