China’s population policy: A social solution to the country’s population/ resources imbalance.

• China houses 21.4% of the world’s total population, 1,192 million people, but there is an imbalance between population and resources. China only has 8% of the world’s bio-climatic resources, 10% of the fresh water resources, 5% of the fossil fuels, and 4% of the non fuel minerals. This shows that the country doesn’t have a fair share of the world’s resources for its large population.

•The regional differences effect food production as 25% of the land is infertile mountain or deserts, 13% forests, and 50% only suitable for pasture. This means that only 10% of the land can be used for agriculture to produce food for Chinas massive population.

•In the 1950’s Chinas communist regimes attitude to the problem was to maximize it for military and strategic strength.

•As a result of this the population continued to rise, leading to a famine in the late 1950’s and early 1960’s.

•The problem could be addressed in many ways;

1. Young people were encouraged to migrate from east to west- this brought the Han Chinese culture to ethnic groups.

2) Productivity increased- intense farming meant jobs were lost to machinery

3) Economic restructuring- Estimates show that in 2030 china will need more than double the current world import for grains ...
