Assess the effects on those using the service of three different discriminatory practices in heath and social care setting.

difficulties as unfortunately one of the service users named Mr Osier was being very difficult towards her. Mr Osier was discriminating against her ethnicity and where she is from. He was labelling her and making little comments when he was told that she will be looking after him. He used comments such as her skin colour and the country she is from and her religious beliefs for example Mr Osier said he did not want to socialise with her because she was Asian. Also he made comments because she is wearing a scarf and he did not feel comfortable with her looking after him. Mrs Patel was affected by this immensely as she was really hurt by the comments that were made about her ethnicity. This made her self-esteem go down as she began to withdraw herself from everyone she felt as if she was not worth anything and that she would not be able to fit in with everyone because of her skin colour was different to many of the clients and that they would not want to socialise with her. Also this made Mrs Patel feel that if she didn’t wear a scarf she would be treated differently this made her feel very upset that she was not being accepted because of culture and religious beliefs. She felt that her self-confidence was beginning to go low as she was a young Asian woman and that clients opinions in the day care centre will affect her as they will not want an Asian woman looking after them. This affected Mrs Patel confidence as she used to find it very easy to approach as this has occurred it has affected Mrs Patel’s way of communication as she will not find it very easy to be able to talk to someone because of how she looks and what country she is from. As Mrs Patel has lost her self-confidence this can make her withdraw from people causing her to isolate from others as when she is doing her job and trying to help at the day care centre she will find that the effects of the discrimination will stop her from building relationships and friendships with service users. This will also make Mrs Patel lack motivation into coming work more often as she might have the fear of facing discrimination again. Case study 2 One of the clients in sugar and spice called Anne came to me yesterday morning informing me that another client has been discriminatingher because of her disability. Anne suffers from a disability which mean she has to be in a wheelchair. As a results none of your clients at Sugar and Spice communicate and socialise with Anne because of her disability, as a result its causing Anne to have a very low self- esteem because she has no one to talk to or share her problems with and not even that staff or our service users which is making it very hard to get through to her and get to come out of her shell. Because of this none of the staff can communicate with her because Anne has been isolating herself from all the staff and keeping herself to herself. Case study 3 Mr Smith came to me in the morning today telling how he can’t trust anyone. Its because Mr. Smith told one of our staff Jane that he has HIV and Mr. Smith heard her sharing his data with another staff, which made Mr. Smith feel like he is unable to trust anyone. Because of this Mr Smith doesn’t feel safe at all and is not opening up to anyone which is making it hard for the staff to communicate with him, which means he needs are not being met. As a results of the staff being not confidential , other staff are treating him different because they know that he has HIV, which has given Mr Smith low self esteem and now he feeling embarrassed and feels like everyone is judging him. This has caused Mr Smith to isolate him from the rest of the residences at Sugar and Spice day care centre. Kinga Boguszko
