In the video, there were three features I believe were most successful in encouraging young women to get active. One of these was social media, they took something that we use everyday to get them to be motivated and focus on the positives of social media also instead of the negatives. They also used social media to get more women playing sports recognised. This combats how in the past sport between men vs women wasn’t equal and also fights stereotypes that women are bad at playing sports. These stereotypes need to be stopped because they can affect women’s physical and mental health and block them from playing a sport they love. Another feature I considered to work well was that they created an entire website for the campaign and is a safe space for young girls to be inspired and research about different sports. On the website they can hear stories from other girls, find local sporting events, get sporting tips and even plan physical activities for themselves. The final feature of the campaign I believe were most successful was the inclusivity of the girls in the video. They showed many types of girls with different heights, weights, ethnicity, disabilities and athletic ability. It reinforces their message saying that any girl can play sport.
Somethings I believe could stop younger girls from playing sport could be medical issues or inconveniences. For example, iron deficiency could make a girl feel too tired to play and train for her sport. She could also be going through her menstrual cycle and feel uncomfortable or heavy pains depending on what the sport is. Maybe some girls have issues with their arms and legs which could restrict them from moving as well. A large issue I believe that stops girls from playing sport is probably time. Most girls in their late teens are focusing on other things like driving, working or schoolwork etc. Some girls just aren’t interested in sport and may have never played one before high school so they may not be used to managing their time to involve sport as well which results in them dropping the sport.
To make sure as many women as possible see this video I would play it at a school assembly for all the students to see and focus on. I personally feel that when I am shown a video in class I do not pay as much attention to it than when I am at an assembly. I think it is because your focus is always to the front and I don’t talk to my friends as much as do in class. The biggest way to promote this campaign would be the same way the government did. I would put it on as a commercial on television or as a mobile advertisement because those are both the most popular forms of advertisement. This way instead of seeing the message of the campaign once, they will see it multiple times and it will start having an impact on them and how girls perceive sports.
I feel that this campaign is extremely effective in influencing girls to play sports because of the way it was advertised and who is funding or leading the campaign. Because the campaign was made by the Australian Government, we can tell the videos views on girls’ physical activity and it’s messages are reliable and is an important thing to promote.
