Look at the presentation of heroes & villains in the media. Discuss why the battle of ‘good v evil’ is something we find intriguing and why we want the hero ‘to win’

In this essay I am to look at the presentation of heroes & villains in the media. I will then discuss why the battle of ‘good v evil’ is something that we find intriguing and why we always want the hero to win.

I will do this by comparing different heroes and villains in films to the way most heroes are represented in reality and also expressing my opinion on what I believe to be a real true hero and villain.

A hero, in my opinion, is someone who we admire for his or her courage and influence on the public and possibly the world. It is someone who, everyday, risks their life or gives up their time to help people in need. Yet not all heroes are life-risking people who put themselves in jeopardy to save public lives. A hero can also be someone who takes it upon him or herself to make a difference in the world or to help the less fortunate (i.e. raising money for the poor or ill people in other parts of the world). You don’t just have to have ‘super powers’ or have to be strong and intelligent in order to be a hero (i.e. Superman or Batman). There are some great people who have really made a difference in the world and people we would class as a true hero (i.e. Mother Teresa, Martin Luthar King or Nelson Mandela). These people have really put themselves out there to change the world and create a more calm and enjoyable atmosphere.

A villain, in my opinion, is someone we despise for his or her deeds or doings to people and things in the world. It is someone who will go out of their way to get what they want and make sure people suffer the consequences of getting in the way or preventing the villain from having his or her own way. Although villains are seen as filthy, atrocious, horrifying people, not all villains are like that in reality. A villain in the real world is someone who commits a crime against society or someone who commits many sins in their life (i.e. a murderer or a bank robber). There are some people in this world who are seem by the public eye as untrustworthy, pathetic villains (i.e. Saddam Hussein or Osama Bin Lardin). These people have really taken a wrong turn in the world of mankind and have ended up being hated for and labeled as a villain by the human race.

Heroes & villains are associated very much with everyday life. It is essential that when we watch any film, with a hero or villain in, we want the hero to always succeed and fulfill his mission as it creates a much more enjoyable and satisfying effect on others as well as ourselves.

The first hero I am going to look at is James Bond. A hero famous in both films and originally in the novels by Ian Fleming.

James Bond is known for being an under cover agent ‘007’. His duty has always been to protect the world from mass destruction and evil beings.

We associate James Bond with a womanizing, suited up, gadget man. By this I mean that James Bond is always seen in films as the person who always ‘gets the girl’ or who always has the best gear and outfits. Also James Bond wouldn’t be James Bond without the couple of phrases he says in all his films “Martini...shaken, not stirred” and “Names Bond, James Bond”. These sayings are like his catchphrases to grab the audiences’ attention and trigger in your mind something that tells you that a mysterious, dangerous or very passionate/romantic bit is about to occur. Also another predictable saying which is said in all of James Bond films is when the villain is about to attempt to kill James Bond: “Goodbye Bond”. This is always a way to tell which is the villain because a villain will always say “Goodbye Bond”.

The hero, James Bond, represents our belief that most stereotypical heroes are associated as the handsome, strong, stylish type. It tells us that heroes like James Bond are in it for the satisfaction of saving the world, but it comes across as just wanting to impress the girl by killing the ‘Baddy’.

Another thing connected with James Bond is that before every film with James Bond in they show a 15 minute clip of the basic plot or an image of what you’re going to expect or not expect for the rest of the film.

James Bond is the type of person we admire because of his fantasy glamorous lifestyle and the fact that every girl would dream to be with him and a lot of men/boys would love to be him.

The next hero I am to look at is Indiana Jones. Indiana Jones consists of 3 films (a trilogy) ...
