Basic figures
The company has adopted an enhancement process through focusing in some areas as follows:-
EDC has committed itself to carry out its operations in safe and healthy conditions for its employees. EDC's strong commitment to safety is evident in its documented QA instructions and procedures, which comply with American Petroleum Institute (API) and International Association of Drilling Contractors (IADC) recommendations
Internal and external audits are performed regularly to ascertain that documented quality assurance procedures are adhered to. All audits verify conformance of operations with quality assurance guidelines as developed by EDC in accordance with ISO 9000 series requirements.
EDC's operations are performed in a way that results in the least possible impact on the environment surrounding the locations of operations. Environmental protection procedures are in conformance with MARPOL and American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) standards for offshore operations. In both land and sea operations, EDC quality assurance requirements often go well beyond host country regulations.
The training center is able to provide International Association of Drilling Contractors (IADC) approved courses in all major areas. EDC's technical training abroad is primarily conducted in the Maersk Training Center in Svendborg, Denmark, which provides valuable and qualified technical courses. A management and administration personnel training abroad includes courses in Europe, USA and Dubai, UAE. Personnel from the Finance and Purchase Department are regularly trained in Moller Supply Services in Houston in the use of the purchase system and purchasing practices
Market Share
The company undergoes two main types of projects:-
- Introducing new rig to the company service where rigs fall under three categories:-
-
Land rigs (also called “Super Rigs”): as the name implies, these type of rigs work in deserts, fields and any other type of lands which are expected to produce oil or gas
-
Jack-ups: they are offshore rigs which use jacks for rig fixation in the seabed.
-
Work-Over Rigs: these rigs are smaller than the land rigs where they are assigned to clean, plug and perform other auxiliary jobs for the well other than drilling which is only devoted to the super rigs.
- Upgrading of an existing rig where this upgrade can be introducing a new feature in the rig to enhance certain function of a system or the replacement of an existing system by a new one. The duration, cost and complexity of these minor projects are surely far less than the above mentioned project.

Methodology
- Getting the users involved. In applying this to EDC, we succeeded in getting participants of the preventive maintenance involved through interviews.
- Use a problem solving approach. We will be using an accelerated analysis approach to identify requirements and the needs of the existing and the improved system in a short time.
- Establishing phases
- Establishing standards. (Documentation, automated tools)
- The EDC case will be supported with the necessary documents which will make it easier to trace our research.
- The project will be aided with the software support of Microsoft Project.
5. Justifying systems as capital investments. (Benefit/cost analysis, risk management). The research will be supported with Benefit/cost analysis, risk management of the existing and the improved system.
6. Updating and revising scope at every stage of the research to make sure that the system analysis is in its right track.
7. Dividing and conquering the existing system. The existing system of EDC will be divided to several building blocks so that it can be easily analyzed and easily diagnosed.
-
Establish a Project time schedule to track the progress of the system development phases ( Refer to Gantt chart in Appendix (A1)
