Introduction.

In this essay I will be looking at situation comedy and in particular the American sitcom Friends. I will be looking at the success of the show in particular the shows success in Britain and why is it so successful in Britain even though it is from America.

First of all I will be looking at the show itself describe it in detail to see what the show is about and how it works and then I will analyse the show in more detail and relate them o the various theories we have learnt.

Friends made its debut in 1994 as a sitcom about six 20-somethings living in New York's West Village district and it immediately struck a chord with many of its audience and soon became an international brand.

Friends and its cast caught on with viewers looking for an escape from the fast-paced 1990s. It made household names of David Schwimmer (Ross), Jennifer Aniston (Rachel), Matthew Perry (Chandler), Courtney Cox Arquette (Monica), Lisa Kudrow (Phoebe) and Matt LeBlanc (Joey.)

The series focuses on the friendship of three men and three women who frequently gather at each other’s apartments and share sofa space at Greenwich Village’s “Central Perk” coffeehouse. Monica (Cox Arquette) is a chef with an obsession for neatness and order in her life. She is also married to Chandler (Perry), a dry wit who is never lost for words. Across the hall is Chandler’s longtime roommate Joey (LeBlanc), an actor currently on “Days of Our Lives” playing a man with a woman’s brain?
Sharing his apartment is Rachel (Aniston), Monica’s best friend from high school and former roommate. Rachel works for a fashion designer and is still trying to get by without help from her well-to-do father. Across the road from Monica and Chandler is Monica’s brother Ross (Schwimmer), a teacher who has been divorced three times, including once from Rachel following a reckless weekend in Las Vegas.
Rounding out the circle of friends is Monica’s ex-roommate, Phoebe Buffay (Kudrow), an offbeat, eternally optimistic folk singer and massage therapist, who gave birth to triplets as a surrogate mother for her half-brother and his wife.

However this was not how there lives all started out, you see when you were first introduced to the characters, you see the group all talking in there local coffee house, moaning about how bad life was treating them. You have Ross, complaining that his life is as his wife has just left him for another woman, you have Joey the out of work actor unable to get a job, Chandler stuck in the same dead end job, Monica saying she has trouble finding a decent guy, the when she finds one he turns out to be a dud, then you have Phoebe who is weird as usual, then you have Rachel the first time you see her she is dripping wet and wearing a brides outfit, since she just run out on her own wedding. Straight away you are involved in this groups lives, and you have a certain connection to them as we have all had at one time or another in our life been in a good place or a bad place.

The show, became a huge hit with fans all around the world, due to the fact that everyone could relate to the group and there is no doubt that within your groups of friends that you have once compared yourself to one of the group are you the funny guy Chandler, the Casanova Joey or the geeky guy Ross.

Over the years as the show went the, relationship between the characters evolved, especially with Ross and Rachel there will you wont you relationship had fans of the show constantly hooked as this almost lasted the whole ten series of the show as from the very first episode you saw that there was a spark between these two characters, and finally after they had gone through being together for two years then splitting up and then having a baby the couple who you always wanted to get together finally did in the very last episode.

Another relationship that was quite a shock to the fans, was that of Monica and Chandler, these two first got together at Ross’s second wedding when after one to many drinks ended up in bed together, however know one would believe that this relationship would last however it did and other than the first drunken wedding of Rachel and Ross which was annulled, this was the first wedding that lasted. The reason that these two were so compatible that they were both the ones that were always unlucky in love, that’s why at the end of the day these ...
