Assess the impact of new technologies on the music industry - Discuss the significance and implications of the developments.

Assess the impact of new technologies on the music industry. Discuss the significance and implications of the developments. During the last ten years the development of new technologies has impacted dramatically on the music industry both negatively and positively causing dips in sales figures, which equals loss of profits, but also more freedom for audiences in the way they organise/listen to their music creating obstacles and opportunities for the BPI (British Phonographic industry) and the RIAA (Record Industry Association of America). These developments include, digital signalling for television and radio, the Internet and new types of audio players and recorders. Although the last ten years has seen most of the rapid impact of new technologies on the music industry it has been happening since the 1970's when cassette tapes were invented to replace records and it was said that people will no longer buy records as they can record songs from the radio for free but it was also said that this encourages active audience intake of music as people can record from records and customize their own albums. The development of digital television has impacted positively on the music industry. Sky digital, NTL digital and Telewest digital television offer twenty-three music channels. These music channels help promote artists, people have the chance to watch artists videos and

Essay on Crass music

Essay on Crass music CRASS - These guys own. It's time someone did a full profile. Name - CRASS Genre - Anarcho Crust Guilty Parties - Mick Duffield Phil Free Steve Ignorant Eve Libertine N. A. Palmer Penny Rimbaud Gee Vaucher Joy de Virve Pete Wright Years: 1978-1984 CRASS In 1976, political problems and social stress led to the birth of the Punk movement. With the message "Do It Yourself", these so-called anarchist bands launched verbal attacks on the system. Within 18 months this new anarchy had been bought out, and was the "biggest fad since Hippie"1. In 1977 Crass was started. They "made it their mission to create a real alternative to the music biz exploitation."2 Crass is and was the most genuine anarchist punk band to ever exist, and stayed true to their cause to the end. Crass combined music and political views into meaningful, angry songs about society's sexism, machoism, racism, and overall oppression. They refused to compromise, and always said exactly what they thought. Drummer Penny Rimbaud and vocalist Steve Ignorant started Crass in Essex, England in 1977 on Penny's farmhouse commune. Crass did not intend to become a band originally, as show by this quote. "The idea of becoming a band had never seriously occurred to us, it simply happened."4 They also said that in the beginning of their musical carrer, "Basically anyone was free to join in

Advanced production critical evaluation

Advanced production critical evaluation For my AS production I followed a set brief. I was required to work in a group to produce a 3 minute trailer for a new horror/thriller movie. In my A2 advanced production my brief was to work within a group in order to produce a promotional package to introduce a new band into the mainstream music industry. The package could take any form, using a variety of medias. We started the project by doing individual research into the music industry. Through my research I aimed to gain in depth knowledge and understanding of the industry. I researched the style, form, genre and identity of album covers, music videos and record labels. I found all media products have signifiers of the form of the media product, and generic signifiers. This allows audiences to instantly reconigise the product. There are conventions of form and genre which help give the product identity. This identity is created through the use of imagry, copy, iconography, intertextuality, As a group we aimed to construct identity and style of a new an alternative mainstream band. We aimed to establish a unique style within the Indie genre and to sell the band to a mainstream audience and music industry through the production of a music video, LP album cover and a press release. Each member of our group had ideas for band/ artist they wanted to use and for the

Kate rubs the bottle harder. NEIL: Finally! Put bottle down and it fizzes over. NEIL: Come and look at my time machine, I call it The Core! They walk towards the left of the stage. Act 1, scene 2 They walk towards left of stage. Neil stands next to the time machine. KATE: Isn't it big! NEIL: Would you like to take it for a ride? Curtains open with carry on styled jingle. The lighting would just be plain, full lights facing towards the stage. When Neil is shaking the bottle we will have a glass bottle with a cork as the lid. Inside the bottle we will have bicarbonate of soda and vinegar so when the cork is released the mixture will react and fizz over the bottle. Neil opens the door to the time machine inviting Kate in. They step into the machine. KATE: It's a tight squeeze. NEIL: It's small but effective! KATE: Turn it on! Time machine makes sounds and shakes vigorously. KATE: Ahhh, move a little to the right, ohhh to the left, Argh you're sat on my arm. NIEL: Look out below I'm coming. ACT 2, SCENE

Piracy is an increasing problem.

Arthur Kanai Economics, Period 3 Current Event Summary Piracy is an increasing problem. Every song ever made is on the net and free for download. Even movies before they're released. We all do it, we all download songs. Music industry has started to feel the heat. 15% decline in cd sales in the last two years. 6 the first, and 9 the last. 400,000- 600,000 movie swaps a day. If each movie is worth about 20 dollars, that's about 8 million - 12 million dollars a day. It's not only music, but it's movies, games, software, and television. People have started to get punished for piracy. Last month, students at Princeton, Michigan, and Rensaeler we sued by record exsecutives. They're seeking 150,000 dollars per song shared. Recently, a court has ordered Verizon to release the information of one of their costumers who has allegedly 600 songs. It started with napster, now it's things like kazaa. These programs have definitely gotten smarter. There is no central server to just shut them off anymore. It's great. Relation to economy. The effects of the increase in piracy has already been witnessed around the world. Asia is the hardest hit. In China, 90% of the media sold is pirated. The music industry has suffered a huge loss. They are no longer promoting new up and coming artists because it's not worth the money they will invest in endorsing the artist since 90%

Aspects of Films We made a list of aspects o films at the beginning of the year and we thought that it would be a good idea to look at these and think about what we will do for each of the 10 things Lighting When we are inside everything will be well lit with the overhead lights but when we are outside there will only be natural lighting. This way things will look more creepy and things are likely to look more real. It should have the same effect as it did in the film The Blair Witch Project. Editing When we are editing we want it mainly to be full of jump cuts because this is the type that is used when directors want to build pace Atmosphere Dark, creepy. Many shadows. Build suspense with music. Plot Female student has an affair with a male teacher and then things turn nasty when she tries to end it. Costume Kate: school uniform (white shirt and black trousers) Graham: smart clothes, lab coat for in school and a dark jacket for outside. Music/sound For the main part of the film we will extract the audio and just rely on the images and the music. There will be the two voiceovers from the main characters and one final blood curdling scream to end it. Camera movements In our film most of the footage will be either still or just panning. We think this because if we try something too ambitious then the film will turn out looking very amateur. We think that

Stevie Wonder has been a major figure within the Black Music scene over the last forty years.

Stevie Wonder has been a major figure within the Black Music scene over the last forty years. Stevie Wonder was born Steveland Judkins on May13, 1950, however, he now prefers to be known as Steveland Morris after his mother's married name. He was blind at birth. The cause was the prematurity of the eye. Blood vessels in the back of the eye hadn't reached the front of the eye thus when he was born, prematurely, that growth temporarily stopped then wildly took off branching out in the Vitreous of the eye. After his family moved to Detroit in 1954, Steveland joined a church choir, the gospel leanings on his music balanced by R & B. In 1961, Ronnie White of the Miracles, who arranged an audition at Motown Records, discovered him. Berry Gordy immediately signed Steveland to the label. Wonder was placed in the care of writer / producer Clarence Paul, who supervised his early recordings. In 1963, the release of the live recording 'Fingertips' made his commercial success, and Motown quickly marketed him on a series of albums as 'the 12-year-old genius' to try to link him with the popularity of 'the late genius', Ray Charles. Attempts to repeat the success of 'Fingertips' was difficult, and Wonder's career was placed on hold during 1964 while his voice was changing. From 1965-70, Stevie Wonder was marketed like the other big Motown stars, recording stuff that was chosen for him by

The Italian Job - Analyse the media devices of the opening scenes and car chase used in both Italian jobs and comment on their effectiveness.

Media coursework The Italian Job Analyse the media devices of the opening scenes and car chase used in both Italian jobs and comment on their effectiveness. Both films show an insight into technology; the modern version is more technologically advanced. All this is due to the availability of technology in the two eras. Donald Sutherland known as John Bridger in the later version of the film uses a mobile phone and whilst carrying out the mission the use of infer-red devices, laptops and other technology is also significantly used. In contrast to this the 1969 version Michael Cain gets the main idea from the slideshow left by Beckerman. Also whilst Seth Green hacks into the traffic network system in the 2003 version the tapes are manually switched in the previous edition. The technology element is effective because it uses equipment and gadgets, which you don't use during day-to-day life. As well as technology music played a great part in both films to create pace and excitement. In the modern Italian Job the music is composed and produced by John Powell. The rhythmic opening titles start with some thick European strings and as the scenes develop in to more tension the pace and the rhythm increases, the "car chase" is one example. It combines with sound effects to create an escalating feeling which enhances the film by making it more dramatic and exciting. The music in the

George Gershwin Biography

The Effect of George Gershwin on the 21st Century Singer, composer George Gershwin once said "True music must repeat the thought and inspirations of the people and the time. My people are Americans and my time is today." In today's society there are not many composers looked up to. Now everyone wants to learn about new rappers or legends in sports. To others, like pianist they look up to people like Bach, Beethoven, Mozart or new hip pianist like Alicia Keys. To some people George Gershwin is considered one of the few great pianists. When he emerged as a new composer he was unlike any other, this man was unique in all sorts of ways. He was unique for his sense of style and jazziness. Today, his music is rarely played, but when you hear it you just may know a song of his. On September 26, 1898, in Brooklyn New York, Morris and Rose Gershvin were surprised with a baby boy named Jacob "George" Gershwin (Gersh-vin). Rose and Morris were both Russian- Jewish immigrants that were from the middle class. Rose and Morris had their name changed from Gershowitz then to Gershwin because the immigrant official changed it upon their arrival. George was the second child out of four. At the very young age of eleven Morris and Rose bought a piano for George's brother Ira. To their surprise George was the child that could play by ear. 1 On the piano he played a piece that was
