Roxio a developer of CD burning technology recently acquired Napster, which was once an illegal, file swapping service using a centralised peer to peer network, its demise came after numerous law suits regarding copyright and legal issues from the record industry.

Napster is a re-branding of Pressplay, an early subscription service, for the purchase of music online it failed to succeed and know provides a platform for Napster to reintroduce itself in the online business market on a legitimate basis. Pressplay was formed by major record labels to try and tackle the online music piracy which was eroding away at their business. Napster has its own end to end service meaning it does it all from the back end servers to the front end clients. It operates through various ‘server farms’ across the USA, where it initially was introduced and is looking to expand to Europe. All content is centrally served off these servers and content is distributed in the Microsoft wma codec, either in streaming or downloaded form.  Napster has also built its own subscription management service, it tracks all usage and reports back to the rights holders the record industry.

Napster  have utilised the Microsoft digital rights management software which in simple terms limits how many times downloads can be copied to other computers and the types of mobile music devices, Napster have also built a sophisticated license serving and renewal mechanism. The system is scalable for worldwide distribution, which is important as it looks to expand to Europe.
