Based on the true events of Marjane Satrapi’s life experiences, ‘Persepolis’, is a tale of an outspoken young girl growing up during the eighties, in a radically altering Iran. This very personal and unique french animated film, follows Marji, our spirited heroine, through social conflict, a revolution and the coming of age in Europe. Her impassioned journey encounters mouth opening moments of anger, pain, shock as well as romance, humour and charm.

The film opens with an irritated 24 year old Marjane, voice leant by Chiara Mastroimanni, unable to board a plane home to Tehran, for reasons unknown to us. She is engulfed by smoke as she puffs away on a cigarette when we are swiftly transported into her childhood. Transmitted to an age when she was continuously confronted by God as she believed herself to be one of his personally appointed prophets.
