Body Modification

Body Modification Perfect/imperfect; cultural values and the body How the NHS funding of body modification reflects our attitudes and values towards the body... To fund or not to fund?? Body modification and adornment is a universal culture. All civilizations have attempted to change their body in order to fulfil their cultural construct of beauty, religious and/or social obligations. Many activities in society involve intentionally harming one's own body, such as tattoos, piercings, and cosmetic surgery. These are seen as acceptable ways to cope with feelings, and express emotions. If a woman is unhappy with her body, and wants bigger breasts, she can go to a doctor and have the operation done. Many other types of cosmetic surgeries are on the rise as well: liposuction, silicone implants in the lips and buttocks, and face lifts. All of these are only short- term solutions to a woman's unhappiness with their appearance. They feel a sense of failure in not living up to the male-dominated cultures ideas of perfection. Last year, psychologists used computer generated composite images of about 60 different photographs of faces. They created the "average composite" from the most attractive faces and an "enhanced composite" with exaggerated features - bigger eyes and lips, higher cheekbones in the female group. The enhanced images were perceived to be the most desirable.

Research skills and Practice This essay is going to look at four different methods of research used in projects and the need to reference accurately. The first section will look at websites. The second section will discuss books. The third will concentrate on journals and the fourth section will focus on newspapers. All four sections will evaluate the good and bad points of these methods of research. The essay will also compare and contrast two conventional systems of referencing. These are the Harvard System and the Footnote System. Finally the essay will evaluate various copyright laws by examining the key feature about research. When writing a book, essay, report and so on, it is usual to use information from a range of sources to support the author's argument. These people must be given the credit that they deserve. It also stops the author from getting accused of plagiarism or copyright. Referencing also allows readers of the text to refer to the source from which the information has been taken. Cassius Clay - analogy

Hannah Davis Mr. Jim Cassey English 11- Mod 4 Is it ever a wonder how some people are naturally good at sports? Many people can and will struggle their whole lives to become and amazing athlete; furthermore, to earn the title as "The Greatest." Then, there are the other people who are just born that way. In the novel A Separate Peace by John Knowles, the character Finny can be described as one of those natural born athletes. He can do just about any physical activity he sets his mind to. Finny, an amazing athlete, can be compared to some in real life: Cassius Clay, more commonly known as Muhammad Ali, who took an almost dead sport and made it his career and his life. The specific intent of this paper is to present an analogy between Finny and Cassius Clay. I Finny was depicted in the novel as an amazing athlete. A1 For example, he was very good at sports. Finny broke the school swim record, which was set by A. Hopkins Parker in 1940. 3 He had an odd feeling that he could beat Parker's record, and he did. 1 He beat the record by seven seconds. After Gene told him the good news, Finny yelled, "My God! So I really did it. You know what? I thought I was going to do it. It felt as though I had that stopwatch in my head and I could hear myself going just a little bit faster than A. Hopkins Parker." 2 The fact that Finny could beat the record with no

Examine problems faced by sociologists when using secondary sources in their research.

Problems faced by sociologists when using secondary sources. Secondary sources consist of data which hasn't been collected by the sociologist. This data can offer primarily qualitative or quantitative data, and, as such, is useful to both interpretivists and positivists in macro and micro sociological research. The data itself can range from small collections of notes in the form of personal diaries, to historical documents of varying length and focus to large-scale studies conducted by governments or independent researchers. As a result, secondary sources can vary considerably in their size, content and usefulness. Secondary sources often come in the form of historical documents. Like qualitative data from primary sources, secondary sources are often open to a number of interpretations. Historical documents typically rely heavily on inconclusive data: investigations making use of unavailable data (Laslett, 1972 - census) or unrepresentative data (Anderson, 1971) are therefore less credible as definitive studies. Overall, though, historical documents are vitally important to sociologists studying change over a period of time, or society during a specific period of history. Furthermore, sociologists must struggle with the issues posed by life documents when planning and executing their investigation. For example, diaries which are not intended for public consumption may

Investigating The Use of Pectinase

Investigating the use of pectinase in the Production of fruit juice. Introduction/Background Information Enzymes are proteins, which act as the acceleration devices of biochemistry. This means that they are used to catalyze (speed up) reactions. Enzymes are specifically designed for a target substrate, according to their size, shape and chemical charges that precisely bond to its substrate molecule. The section of the enzyme that binds to the substrate is called the active site and an advantage of enzymes being so specific is that they will not interact with or disturb other components present during the reaction. The diagram shows the reaction between pectinase and pectin and also how they are specific to each other. The enzyme that I will be using during my investigation is pectinase, which is the specific enzyme used in the breakdown of pectin, a polysaccharide substrate found in the cell walls of many plants. In plants the pectin naturally functions as a glue to hold the cell wall together. Pectins are large polysaccharide molecules, similar to starch except that the repeating unit (residue) of pectin is galacturonic acid instead of the glucose in starch. Moreover, pectins are made up mostly of chains of several hundred galacturonic acid residues. This causes fruit cell walls to have a complex structure of interwoven polymers, which no single enzyme can fully break

A discussion of Betty Smith's 'A Tree Grows in Brooklyn'.

Betty Wehner Smith's unique ability to capture the reality of American society in the early nineteen hundreds is seen in the novel A Tree Grows in Brooklyn. The setting of the novel stems very much from the author's own childhood. Society can truly relate to this story, as it has a place in every American family's roots. The time-defying novel evokes sympathy by telling the story of a young impoverished family, comparing their rough lives to a relentless tree native to Brooklyn, New York. Betty Smith was born on December 15, 1904 in Brooklyn, New York and was raised in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn. Her name was originally Elisabeth Keogh. Smith attended public schools until the age of fourteen when, having completed eighth grade, she began working at a series of factory and clerical jobs. An avid reader as a young girl, she also wrote poems and acted in amateur productions at the Williamsburg YMCA. Moving to the Midwest, she met and married George Smith, a law student at the University of Michigan. There her two daughters were born. She audited literature and writing classes at the university and, although not a regular student, had two plays published in a collection of undergraduate work and won an Avery Hopwood prize (Collins 23-25). From 1930 to 1934 Smith studied with George Pierce Baker and others at the Yale Drama School. Smith's first two

A Tale of Magic Beans-Creative Prose

A Tale of Magic Beans It was a dismal eve when Jack returned home from the market after buying seeds from a vile looking character. "Jack!, Where's that bread!" Jack's mom screamed." "What the heck are these?" "Beans, magic beans" Jack replied sullenly. "Stupid, useless wretch!" His mother exclaimed as she lashed out at Jack. "I hate you!" Jack yelled as he ran out the door." "I am never coming back, never!" he screamed. Jack ran away from the house past the market and into the woods. It was midnight by the time Jack stopped running and he looked around. The putrid smell of the damp rotting wood covered with moss was overpowering. The woods were eerily silent, but for the raspy winds that were Jack's only companions that night. Alone and exhausted Jack decided to stop here and sleep. But before sleep could come Jack withdrew the accursed seeds and threw them at his feet and spat at them for his undeserved misfortunes. Jack woke the next morning with only a clump of dirt as a pillow and the mist as his moist blanket. As he tried to decide what his next course of action was to be he looked over in to the clearing. To his disbelief where the beans had been was a giant beanstalk. As Jack walked towards it he followed it with his eyes all the way up into the clouds. Jack decided to climb up the bean stalk to get a better view. As he neared the clouds he decided to see how tall the
