This song represents a lot of firsts come from Michael Jackson. It was the first single song from “off the wall” album, also it was first recording by Michael Jackson made that he had complete creative control over. Before, many of his song were written by Quincy Jones, but Michael Jackson wrote this one himself. It was also his first solo song to get a music video. The whole song is base on the words “lovely,” “fever,” “power,” “happen” and so on. The first syllable of these words is sung on D#, the major third in the key of B. The second syllable is on the A below, the flat seventh in B. The interval between these two notes is a tritone. It created a strong emotional confliction and resonance with all the audience, which makes this song just awesome. Western music theory is based on the buildup and release of tension. One of the best ways to create tension is with dissonance. The tritone is considered by European tradition to be a very dissonant interval. Every major key has a tritone in it, between the fourth and seventh notes of the scale, When typical western listener hear a tritone, their ear wants it to resolve to a less dissonant interval. African-American music treats the tritone

Analysis of Mozart's Symphony No. 41 1st Movement

Symphony #41 in C major was written by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. After Mozart died, the piece was given the name “Jupiter” by the composer Johann Peter Saloman, a composer and concert organizer. It is not certain why, but many believe it was because of its emotional style. Jupiter is the Roman name for the Greek god Zeus- God of all Gods, so therefore, the music represents Jupiter and his power. Later, in 1862, Ludwig Kochel, a writer and composer, published a catalogue classifying all of Mozart’s work, so the piece was eventually named Symphony No 41 in C Major K551 “Jupiter”. The piece was completed on the 10th of August 1788. Mozart was born in 1756 and died in 1791. This means Mozart was 32 when he wrote the piece. Unfortunately, this was the last known symphony Mozart ever composed. The years 1750-1820 were known as the classical period. Before the classical period was the Baroque period, during which there were many discoveries by scientific geniuses such as Newton and Galileo. People started to see proof that the churches and religious powers were not always correct, and people started to become more interested in the power of reason, or proof, rather than just faith. The Classical period therefore became known as the “Age of Enlightenment”. There were certain guidelines composers started to follow when developing a piece so people could understand the

Analysis of the Exposition of the First Movement of Beethoven's First Symphony

Beethoven Symphony no.1 Exposition Essay By Daniel Goode 5th November Symphony no.1, op.21 in C major was written by Ludwig van Beethoven at approximately the age of 25 and was published in 1801. It is best known for its characteristic 3 note rising motif played in the exposition and it’s harmonically unusual introduction. It is clearly influenced by the works of Haydn and Mozart, however it shows certain musical characteristics unique to the style of Beethoven, including generous use of sforzandi as well as more prominent usage of wind instruments. The symphony consists of four movements; this essay will focus on the first movement: adagio molto (introduction) and later allegro con brio in 4/4. It will cover primarily the structure, thematic details and harmony used in the exposition (bars 13-109) The symphony is scored for 2 flutes, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets in C, 2 bassoons, 2 horns in C and F, 2 trumpets in C, timpani and strings. The first subject begins with a tempo change (moves to allegro con brio, meaning fast “in a lively spirit) and lasts from bar 13 to bar 33. After the tonally ambiguous introduction (sometimes described as a “musical joke”) Beethoven eventually confirms the tonic key of C major in an understated manner. The first bar of the exposition, and indeed the dynamics all the way until bar 31 are quiet (piano), and the texture is very thin; the

Wagner's Tristan und Isolde - How does the quote above come through in the music?

“...there is henceforth no end to the yearning, longing, rapture, and misery of love: world, power, fame, honor, chivalry, loyalty, and friendship, scattered like an insubstantial dream; one thing alone left living: longing, longing unquenchable, desire forever renewing itself, craving and languishing; one sole redemption: death, surcease of being, the sleep that knows no waking!” How does the quote above come through in the music? Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde is an opera and the plot consists of a love triangle between Tristan, Isolde and King Mark. Isolde is married to King Mark but Tristan and Isolde both accidentally drank a love potion, which resulting in the two becoming lovers with an unending but impossible love for each other. This unending longing and yearning for desire comes through in the music. One way in which this comes through in the music is through regular use of just one long succession of continuous phrases. This creates the feeling that there is no break between phrases and the phrases just continue immediately from one another. Linked to this is the presence of seemingly unending melodies. This is further enhance in bars 78-80 where rhythmic diminution of the desire motif occurs with the addition of a dotted rhythm from glance motif. By making the phrase even longer than it was originally, it stretches the phrase out to make it seem

Explain how music was used to reveal characters' personalities in the Broadway Musicals

Explain how music was used to reveal characters’ personalities in the Broadway Musical. The Broadway musical was a time of innovation in the world of musical entertainment as it integrated music into the plot in order to advance it, reveal character, or create mood. Before this, forms of entertainment were provided for amusement only, however, with the Broadway musical came the theme of more serious issues that made audiences think and consider the world in which they lived. ‘Showboat’ has been suggested as being the first Broadway musical. Kern uses a perfect 4th to represent the Mississippi River in the musical ‘Showboat’, which is arguably the protagonist of the entire show. In giving it a leitmotif of its own, Kern establishes its dominance in the musical. However, a triton is employed for Parthy’s motif in order to show her hatred and hostility toward the river. In the opening number, ‘Niggers All Work’, hollow chords are used to provide a lack of warmth to the piece. This, along with the detached style of notes shows the hostility the black workers felt toward their white bosses. This is juxtaposed against the long, smooth, upbeat music which is then sung by the white chorus in ‘Cotton Blossom’. The song, ‘Old Man River’ is in the popular song style of ABAB. Section A is legato and the music to the lyrics word paint the gentle lilt of the river

Present and discuss the features of the Broadway Musical. You must refer to specific musical example in your answer. The Broadway Musical surfaced in 1919 and was widely received by audiences for many reasons. After taking inspiration from former entertainment styles such as operas, pantomimes, burlesques and vaudevilles, which were used purely for amusement purposes, with the addition of emerging themes such as integration and popular styles of the time such as jazz and ragtime, the Broadway Musical was born. The use of contemporary popular song styles from the time period was a new feature which belonged to the Broadway Musical. This meant that songs influenced by styles of the time became more popular in the musicals. ‘Showboat’, perhaps the most successful Broadway Musical ever, made use of this feature by integrating the song ‘After the Ball’ into the play. Unlike all the other music in ‘Showboat’, ‘After the Ball’ was not written by Kern for the show, but by Charles K Harris and was a big hit at the turn of the century. This is why the use of this ‘prop song’ proved to be so successful among the audience of ‘Showboat’. In addition, Kern made use of the growing prominence of jazz-styles in music by integrating it into his songs for ‘Showboat’. For example; in ‘Can’t Help Lovin’ Dat Man’, the singer exploits the use of a vocal

Comment on 3 musicals from the exploration and expansion period of the musical.

Comment on three different musicals from the Exploration and Expansion period. The Exploration and Expansion period ranged from 1943-1959; and was the successor to the Broadway Musical. This era contained many important features such as use of popular singing styles like the female belt voice and male baritone, and dance scenes which advance the plot of the musical. ‘Oklahoma’ was seen as the pivotal work from the Broadway Musical to this new era. It reached new heights in terms of the degree of integration it incorporated into the show. There are only 12 musical numbers in the show however, they are reprised and developed in such a way to further the flow of the drama and to connect and portray character relationships. For example, when Laurey appears on stage, she sings material from Curley’s ‘Oh What a Beautiful Morning’ to convey her relationship with him. Also, in order to show his villainous nature, Jud’s song ‘Lonely Room’ is in a minor key; the only piece in the show not in a major key. Music in ‘Oklahoma’ is also integrated in such a way that it reflects the context in which the musical is set; ‘Farmer and Cowman’ has a folk-like element to it and uses folk-dance to accompany the music illustrating the country setting of ‘Oklahoma’. This was the first show to expand its degree of integration past musical techniques and incorporate

Comment on the use of vocal ensembles in musicals from 1900 to the Present Day

Choose and comment on vocal ensembles from a range of musicals Vocal ensembles have been used in musicals from the 1900s until the present day. They can help reveal plots, create atmosphere, or provide texture. Vocal ensembles include duets, quintets, and even some chorus numbers. In the 1927 musical, ‘Showboat’, the duet, ‘Make Believe’ charts the interaction between Magnolia and Ravenal. The latter’s aimlessness is shown through his frequently changing harmonies at the end of phrases. Upon setting eyes upon Magnolia, he stops singing and picks up the theme from her piano piece. The waltz style of the piece demonstrates their love at first sight while changing major and minor keys show the couple’s uncertainty as to where the relationship will go. A modulating rising semi-tone creates intensity before at last, in the final line, they sing together. Another duet from a similar time period comes from the 1935 folk- opera/musical, ‘Porgy and Bess’ and is entitled, ‘Bess, You is My Woman Now’. In this number, the two confess their love for one another and Bess sings a portion of Porgy’s song, ‘When Gawd Made a Cripple’ showing that she is the answer to his loneliness. Porgy’s demanding octave leaps on ‘You Is’, are offset by the gentle syncopation thus removing the harsh nature. This special duet is characterised by the use of F# major which is
