I am going to be looking at the differences in skill, ability and technique. As an A level PE student I think it is important for myself and others to know the difference, as they are easily confused. Further that I’m going to show my understanding by describing practises to improve their components of fitness.

Skill

There are different classifications of skill so it can’t be defined as a single thing. Edexcel Advanced PE defines skill as, is " The ability to perform a technique with consistency and control, with minimum effort" The different classifications of skill are.

These are the different types of skill.

Cognitive skill – involve thinking

Perceptual skills – interpreting an image

Motor skill – use our muscles to create movements

Perceptual Motor skills – involve thinking to create the movement

Skills can be affected by the environment such as the weather, this is knows as an open skill. Whereas when the environment has no impact it is knows as a closed skill. A free throw in basketball in a closed skill, but a tackle in football is an open skill and the opponent is controlling the ball and his speed.

For us to learn any skill in any sport we need the ability required. We are born with ability so it is said to be innate. We need the ability to fully develop the skill. These abilities are hand-eye co-ordination, flexibility and speed. Without these we would not be able to learn the skills we need for our sports. Once the ability is there, with practise we can improve on it.

Technique is linked with skill and ability.  Or us to perform a skill in sport, we must learn the correct technique.  But to learn the correct technique we must have the initial abilities.

SKILL = ABILITY + TECHNIQUE

(Quoted from Advanced P.E for Edexcel by Colin Maskery).

A gymnast needs the natural ability, the main one is flexibility. But before they could perform a skill, for example a back flip, they need to learn the correct technique; this is known as the perfect model. This is the way an individual task should look when performed at its very best.
