IMPLEMENTATION

Resources:

There are three different database programs available for me to use. I can use a. The main Microsoft Access Database, a Microsoft Excel Database or a Microsoft Works Database problem is availability, as I am not able to use Microsoft Works because this project must be done with easily accessible programs, limiting choice to Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Access. The main deciding factor here is ability. The project itself needs to be done at school, not at home. This leaves the choices of Excel and Access again.

Microsoft Excel is designed chiefly as a spreadsheet, so its power as a database is severely limited compared to that of Microsoft Access. Microsoft Access is a relational database program, as it makes several other files for cross-referencing etc. whereas Microsoft Excel is a flat-file database program, meaning that all you have is what is in front of you. Microsoft Works, if I had been able to use it, is also a flat-file database program. Because Microsoft Access is relational and it has lots of extra tools for making the tables, I shall be using Microsoft Access. I will also be using Microsoft Word in order to type up my report.

Microsoft Access is my software choice, but I will also require items of hardware. Again, the main key issue is availability. Fortunately, my hardware choices are quite original, so all of them are easily available to me.

I plan to use a QWERTY keyboard and a mouse as my input devices, as they are probably the best pieces of hardware for what I want. The keyboard allows me to type in values, names and terms that I would not be able to insert just by using a mouse. It also allows me to have a wider variety of field types, such as text and numbers. The mouse is just as important as the keyboard however, as without the mouse, it is much harder to select certain tools and views. Although it IS possible to get along with just a keyboard, it is faster and easier to use a mouse to select what you want than having to remember complex keyboard commands. Some items of hardware are useless for what I want to do. A digital camera could be used to take pictures and then download them into the project. However, seeing as I am doing the project on Microsoft Access (see above), it is pointless to try and include photos. I will also use a CDRW to back up data.

In order to see what I am doing, I have decided to use a VDU, as it is the best output device that directly interfaces with the keyboard and mouse. Having a speaker or plotter would be ridiculous. I shall also include a printer to print off data capture forms and other useful items. Again, both need to be used together for it work properly, as otherwise I would not be able to print my work or I would not know what I was printing. I will also need all of the equipment required for the PC to work ...
